Le cortège du roi Renaud is a suite in five parts. It is based on tales that originated in southern European folk songs dating back as far as the 16th century. A large portion of these songs are of the genre Complaintes songs in which the text gives a detailed description of events having a generally criminal or macabre character. The most familiar song to feature the tales of Roi Renaud is Fualdes consisting of 48 verses.The first part of the suite is based on the song La Porcheronne (The Swineherd). It telis the story of a young woman forced by her mother-in-law to tend pigs while her husband is away fighting in the war. She is freed only when her husband returns sevenyears later.The next part tells the story of La mrquise Empoisonnée (The Poisoned Marquise). A marquise is coerced by her king to become his mistress. The jealous queen poisons her by means of a bouquet of deadly scented fiowers.Despite having the character of a merry dance the third part La maumariée vengee (The Avenged Wedding) expresses the touching story of Queen Clotilde persecuted for her refusal to live according to the Aryan beliefs.La belle engloutie (The Swallowed Beauty) relates the tale of the young wife of King Renaud. She cannot imagine a life without her husband who was mortally wounded in the war and begs the earth to open and swallow her up so thst she may rejoin her love.The gruesome content of the final part Le tueur de femmes (The Wife Killer) bears a strong resembiance to the tale of Bluebeard. The story is about a young wife in danger of being drowned in a pond by her husband which is what happened to her 13 predecessors. Thanks to her cunning she manages to turn the tables and contrive her husband's demise.

Blazon est une œuvre de commande pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Niederbrechen en Allemagne. Elle fut offerte comme cadeau d’adieu à Michael Steiner le directeur musical qui quittait la formation en 2009 après onze années passées à sa tête. Sous son impulsion les musiciens ont accompli d’immenses progrès. Lui dédier une pièce en guise de remerciement s’imposait comme une évidence. La création de l’œuvre a eu lieu le 17 mai 2009. L’orchestre était dirigé pour la dernière fois par son chef. Blazon permet d’exploiter le talent des cuivres et des percussions. La pièce s’ouvre avec une grande fanfare pleine d’énergie qui chemine à travers les pupitresdes trompettes des cors et des cuivres graves. Un changement de tonalité fait apparaître un thème en legato joué d’abord par les bois puis repris par l’orchestre en entier. La fanfare initiale revient soulignée par des motifs ornementés dans les bois pour mener l’œuvre vers sa fin brillante.

Ballet in one act-Agnes de Mille suggested a cowboy ballet to the reluctant Ballet Russe. She said I dug in my heels and said I wanted the best American composer for the music Aaron Copland. Rodeo was an enormous success from the start. De Mille said I gave the performance of my life and got twenty-two curtain calls. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio – St. Paul Op.36 – in 1836 at the age of twenty-seven. The first version which was premiered on 22 May 1836 was then extensively revised by the composer. This second version which at the same time served as the basis for the published version was premiered as early as October that year in Birmingham. The acclaim with which the oratorio was received was exceptional. Within eighteen months of completing the score Mendelssohn was able to list fifty performances of the work. Robert Schumann praised the work effusively and even Richard Wagner who later denigrated Mendelssohn was full of admiration. Today St. Paul belongs to the core repertoire of sacred choral music. This Urtext edition of the oratorio edited by the internationally-recognised Mendelssohn scholar Michael Cooper is based on all critical sources. As well as the principal version of the work the score also includes for the first time numbers which were composed for the first version and subsequently removed. This gives not only an insight into the history of the composition of the work but also with the complete performing material into the performance of the original version.
