Cuba had been on Copland's mind for some time. A commission to write a piece for the Leage of Composers' 20th anniversary gave him the incentive to compose Danzón Cubano for two pianos. It is based on Cuban dance rhythms particularly the danón a stately dance somewhat like the waltz. In two contrasting sections Copland makes use of four Cuban dances with syncopated beats and polyrhythms. Copland explained I did not attempt to reproduce an authentic Cuban sound but felt free to add my own touches of displaced accents and unexpected silent beats.2 Pianos 4 Hands. Copland A

Most of Czech composer Leoš Janá ek ’s music for solo Piano was produced during the relatively short period between 1900 and 1912. This was a period in which Janá ek suffered the death of his second child and had to come to terms with multiple rejections from the Prague music scene which denied the composer and his distinctive musical language the opportunity to participate in international musical developments until 1916 when his work finally managed to gain international recognition. In the Mists was composed during this period of great difficulty and despair in a house in the garden of the Brno Organ School hidden from the eyes ofthe world with a broken self confidence and a mind in a state of melancholy. Influenced by Debussy’s impressionism In the Mists is one of the most remarkable works in 20th-century Piano literature said to be 20 years ahead of its time. In the Bärenreiter Urtext edition Janá ek ’s cycle is presented in the form that can be found in the Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Leoš Janá ek . A preface by Ji í Zahrádka is also included in Czech English and German. Because of the virtuoso nature of Janá ek ’s work it is more challenging and less accessible but extremely rewarding when mastered.

for Euphonium and Brass Band- Dreamsong was commissioned by Geir Ulseth and the Nidaros Brass Band from Trondheim Norway. After a short introduction the soloist introduces a rather nostalgic melody accompanied by the lower brass parts. A fast central section is then played by the band which leads to a climax. Eventually the main melody played by the solo cornet and flugel horn returns overlaid with an ornamented counter-melody from the soloist who then closes the piece with a short cadenza.

Francis Jackson's A Prayer Of John Donne arranged for SATB. Dr Francis Jackson CBE is a British organist and composer. He was born in Malton Yorkshire and received his early education as a Chorister at York Minster under his precursor the legendary Sir Edward Bairstow. Jackson succeeded Bairstow as Organist of York Minster in 1946 a post he held until his official retirement in 1982.
