Opera seria in two acts- As remarkable as the quality of the compositions themselves is the astonishing rapidity with which Mozart composed his last two great operas “Die Zauberflöte” K.620 and “La clemenza di Tito” K.621: From first sketches and drafts to finished products some 800 pages of music penned within the six-month period from April to September 1791. Opinions of the work at the time of its première are as varied as the history of its reception. As a “coronation” opera it initially lent itself to court festivities everywhere and because of its aspect of “clemency” to charitable events. It survived in its own right as opera seria through the first twodecades of the 19th century then but for occasional performances (these sometimes with altered or added texts) fell into obscurity for the next 150 years. First performed at the Wigmore Hall in 1921 Rebecca Clarke’s Trio has good claim to be considered her masterpiece. This expressive and emotionally complex score is one of the outstanding utterances in British chamber music of the period and critics speculate that the musical imagery strongly suggest it may be a response to the experience of the Great War. Easier Piano Pieces 79-Born in Germany in 1786 Friedrich Kuhlau fled to Copenhagen in 1810 to avoid being conscripted into Napoleon's army where he rapidly made a name for himself as a pianist and composer. These are graceful and elegant sonatinas in the classical style. Friedrich Kuhlau's piano sonatinas originally intended for his pupils have remained popular for more than 150 years. They have often suffered from the attention of over-zealous editors who have indulged their own ideas about dynamics and even about notes. This edition of Op.88 has been carefully based on the original 1827 publication in Copenhagen the only differencs being the addition of phrasing (which was almost entirely lacking) metronome marks and the revision of fingering.

Probably composed in 1690 the Messe de Minuït pour Noël H 9 is perhaps Marc-Antoine Charpentier's best-known composition after the Te Deum H 146. The special appeal of this Mass for the Midnight Service on Christmas Eve lies in its use of no fewer than ten traditional French carols while impressively revealing Charpentier's mastery of the concertante style. The eight solo vocalists (SSAATTBB) can easily be taken from the chorus. They are divided into three groups - one group of two sopranos and two groups each comprising alto tenor and bass - which interact with the chorusand instruments. Michael Nyman was inspired to write this single-movement piece Self Laudatory Hymn Of Inanna And Her Omnipotence in 1992 after having discovered the text in the library of a friend. The words belong to Inanna the Queen of theHeavens in the Sumerian religion who proclaims audaciously all that her father Enil has bestowed upon her. Nyman composed the piece for counterTenor James Bowman and recorded it on his eighteenth album Time Will Pronounce:The 1992 Commissions. Unlike many of Nyman’s other albums this one features only one member of the Michael Nyman Band.Nyman is a contemporary British composer of richly layered modular minimalist pieces often incorporatingperiod instruments or instrumentation outside the normal Orchestral offerings. He is particularly well known for his film scores including The Piano The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover Prospero’s Books and The Claim among many others. His work is widely performed.

Missa brevis in F in score. This was the first Mass which Mr. Haydn composed whilst still a student says an entry in the catalogue of Haydn's musical estate. Circa 1798/99 Haydn entered the work without an incipit in his working catalogue as Missa brevis in F. / a due Soprani. Around 1805/06 he added in shaky decrepit handwriting to the title Missa. on the front page of the organ part of one of the set of parts prepared by his copyist Johann ElBler: Brevis / di me Giuseppe Haydn mpria / 1749. This date the earliest yet found on a work by Haydn corresponds to the title of the Haydn catalogue whichindicates the eighteenth year of Haydn's life i. e. 1749/50 as the starting point of his work: Catalogue of all those compositions which I happen to remember writing from my 18th to my 73rd year of life. In 1805 Haydn set about adding further instruments to the original scoring for two violins and figured organ bass and by 15th February 1806 the larger instrumentation was ready as is evidenced by a letter written on this very day by the Haydn biographer Georg August Griesinger.
