You can almost smell the aardvarks! Oh no wait. The kids had P.E. just before band rehearsal. Never mind.Seriously though this cheerful and engaging new piece by Graydon Toms is a sure winner for every Grade 1 1/2 band. Big areas of contrast between the upper Woodwinds and the Brass and Saxophone combination ensure that each player feels important to the group while an easy change of tempo near the end helps the piece sound harder than it plays.Whimsical!

To mark the Handel Year 2009 Bärenreiter is offering a special set on all Handel's keyboard music. Up till now all works have been published as individual volumes Keyboard Works I-IV (BA 4221-4224) in the 'Halle Handel Edition'. These volumes encompass Handel's output over a long period spanning approx. 1705 to 1750. Volumes I and II include both collections of suites (1720 and 1733) which the composer himself saw to print. These standout in terms of their compositional demands and are a testimony to Handel's sometimes idiosyncratic treatment of the Baroque form. Volumes III and IV contain all the other individual surviving piecesand miscellaneous suites. The edition based on the Urtext of the 'Halle Handel Edition' has been edited by the internationally-renowned Handel scholar Terence Best. The music text in each volume which also takes into consideration alternative versions of individual pieces is accompanied by a detailed foreword on the history of the compositions transmission and performance practice. for Violin and Basso continuo- Handel returned repeatedly throughout his life to the composition of works for violin and basso continuo. The earliest autograph HWV 358 was composed around 1707 his last work for this combination of instruments the Sonata in D major HWV 371 stems from circa 1750. In addition to the 5 sonatas which have survived as autographs there are 4 other sonatas of a spurious nature which have found a place in the violin repertoire under Handel's name although they are certainly not from his pen. These sonatas are attempts by other unknown composers to make a name by using the style of the great master. To round off thisfirst ever publication of Handel's Complete Works for Violin and Basso continuo there are two movements currently not available in any other performing edition: the Allegro HWV 408 and an Andante HWV 412. The Authoritative Performing Edition Edition with the recently-revised Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition First ever performing edition of the complete works for violin and basso continuo in one volume With separate violin and continuo bass parts the latter with figures Basso continuo part with figures including 2 movements not available in any other performing edition Includes valuable comments on performance practice An Associated Board recommended title All violinists should buy this volume not only for its completeness and clarity but because it is exceptionally good value for score and parts.(ESTA News Views Spring 2003)

The conductor Hermann Levi a friend of Brahms prepared a piano-vocal score of the work in 1871 prior to the works publication. Brahms revised it upon receiving it. He wanted a symphonic sound from the piano part; what he created fully corresponds to the monumentality of the Song of Destiny. Piano Vocal Score by Hermann Levi und Johannes Brahms. The chorus score contains no Piano reduction or solo parts - for full Vocal score (with Piano reduction) see BA7674-90. Today the “Gloria” RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi ’s best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred Vocal works from the Baroque period. Vivaldi wrote the “ Gloria ” as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Pietà around 1716. In the twelve movements of the “Gloria” Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive sublime outer movements to tender transparently scored solo passages. The same mastery has also been applied to the “Kyrie” RV 587 (BA 8950) scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages. Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. The Piano reductions are straightforward clearly presented and preserve the character of the works. - Attractive Choral pieces which can be combined to form a short mass. - Vocal score as well as choral score available for the “Gloria”. - Informative foreword (Ger/Eng).

Robert Schumann was the first to transport the lyrical character piece for piano to the domain of chamber music. He drew upon the form stamped by Schubert Mendelssohn himself and many others since about 1820 to create a series of cycles in duo combinations. With his Märchenbilder Schumann created in 1851 the first important and path-breaking composition for viola and piano that was not written in sonata or variation form.

Anthems for the Chapel Royal O sing unto the Lord a new song HWV 249a for Soloists (AB) Chorus (SATB) Flute 2 Oboes 2 Trumpets Strings Continuo BA 4263 I will magnify thee HWV 250b for Soloists (SATB) Chorus (SATB) Oboe Strings Continuo BA 4264 As pants the hart HWV 251e for Soloists (SAATBB) Chorus (SAATB) 2 Oboes Strings Continuo BA 4265 Let God Arise HWV 256b for Soloists (AB) Chorus (SATB) Oboe Strings Continuo BA 4266 Handel ’s four anthems were all composed during his London period in the Chapel Royal. “As pants the hart” his fifth setting of this Psalm text waswritten in March 1738 for performance at a benefit concert for the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket. Until just before Handel ’s first visit to England the only instrument permitted to accompany the service in the Chapel Royal was the organ. These four works with their orchestral accompaniments thus represent something akin to a new genre in English church music. The four anthems are presented in clearly laid out vocal scores with straightforward piano reductions based on the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition. Their enticingly varied and self-sufficient orchestral writing provides a suitable framework for the festive chorus and equally festive solo numbers. Today they sound as splendid as ever! The full scores and vocal scores also contain a German translation along with the original English text.

Ballet- Bernstein's first composition in the genre Fancy Free composed in 1944 became extremely popular. The story of the ballet is fairly simple and was later reused by Bernstein in On The Town his popular first Broadway musical. The story devised by Jerome Robbins takes place in New York City where three sailors on shore leave meet three girls in a bar who they dance with and end up fighting over. They soon realize they were foolish to let the women become between their friendships. The music is based on a considerable number of popular styles of the day. At the beginning you hear Big Stuff a popular hit Bernstein later recordedas a single and made famous by Billie Holiday. Bernstein's music is comprised of a fusion of different genres from Latin-American to Popular and Classical to Jazz all of which are footprints in his inimitable style. Available here as part of the Hawkes Pocket Score edition (No.1135) is the Study Score for Bernstein's popular ballet Fancy Free .

Quarter Military Band QMB 511- The 1970s saw a number of religious rock musicals notably Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell and Bernstein was so impressed by the latter that he invited 23-year-old writer Stephen Schwartz to provide lyrics for Mass—once again Bernstein reached beyond his own world of classical music for a collaborator to help him create a large-scale musical theater piece as he had with West Side Story. Mass was Bernstein's most ambitious theater work. Despite its adaptation of the Latin text interspersed with songs 'numbers ' choreographic sequences and symphonic interludes Mass is ecumenical in nature and cannot be categorized. Perhaps the most accurate description of the piece is 'pageant.' With approximately 200 performers including dancers singers a boy chorus rock and blues singers actors and two orchestras as well as a marching band—who play through the audience—Mass is a musical and theatrical experience. Bernstein's Meditation No 2 allows both audience and celebrant a moment of contemplation.
