Mambo Merengue provides an introduction to the world of jazz; it's rhythms harmony and melodic shapes. The pieces demonstrate a variety of jazz styles: Latin blues bebop modal swing and modern. 'Mambo' is believed to be a Haitian Creole word literally meaning 'to talk'. Now 'mambo' is a type of dance derived from the Cuban rumba. Consequently the word combines two of the most appealing aspects of jazz musical conversation and physical movement.

The composer states: “As I began this piece it was as though I were entering a dream. The music was atmospheric undefined and somewhat disorienting. Gradually the material became more focused but just in time to switch to a very different--though related--sound world which became the second movement. Romanza was written as a ballad for the composer�s wife. The first theme is already introduced in the first two bars with a descending line in the woodwind. After this the chorale-like theme returns in the alto oboe and horn. The theme is then repeated but this time in a close harmony setting in a minor key. Then comes the second theme which is extremely melodious. All the parts of the orchestra complement each other in rendering this theme in its entirety. This second theme is the basis on which to launch a development that ultimately reaches a climax based on the last four bars of the first theme after which the theme returns once more though this time as a solemnchorale by the brass. The finale of the work is a variant of the beginning which completes the circle.

Score for this piece which was comissioned by London Brass and first performed in 1992. Quoting composer: The piece was completed without title on 12th August 1992. A title once considered was Canons Chorales and Waltzes butthis was dropped since there was only one canon (the opening) and only genuine waltz (apart from a passage towards the end which superimposes the canon over a waltz rhythm). The following day I read the paper that John Cage haddied - the day I finished writing. For this reason but mainly because Cage was the most revolutionary practical music thinker of the 20th century this piece is dedicated to him. His influence on my music may be perceived underthe 'very un-Cagein' surface: though stylistically there may be little in For John Cage that may have been to his taste I hope he would at least have appreciated its diversity its non-simultaneous multiplicity.
