A Homage to Mendelssohn Gershwin and Ligeti

This work was commissioned by Fanfare Sint-Willibrordus Wintelre from the Netherlands and describes the power and wonders of nature in 4 atmospheric movements: Birth Battle Silence and Water . Wonders of Nature was composed as a soundtrack for a nature film and even without the images the work will appeal to the performers as well as the audience. It appeals to the listener’s own fantasy and imagination as one can attempt to visualise the imagery whilst listening to the music.

Anthem- The Anthem in the post-Reformation church music of England was initially the term given to a choral work with an English biblical text. By the end of the 17th century it begins to take on Italian stylistic elements and becomes a cantata for solo voices choir and orchestra. The anthem 'O sing unto the Lord' presented here based on words of the 96th Psalm is a particularly beautiful example of the transformation of the traditional and the modern style into a unified whole. This composition was commissioned by the Musique Municipale d’Ingwiller for the occasion of their 150th anniversary. The source of inspiration for this work was the municipality of Ingwiller in the French region Alsace. The title of the work refers to the many buildings there that are made of red sandstone and to the ‘Schlembe’ a train connecting Ingwiller with Bouxwiller for sixty years. It consists of 4 movements all related to the city of Ingwiller and its history. This bright and positive work offers beautiful melodic themes slow passages perfect for working on intonation and phrasing as well as pleasant parts for percussion.

Concert March-I composed Axis as a dedication to my friend Shinya Nakamitsu. He is a wonderful graphic designer who loves wind band music. Some years ago I made a demo CD to hand out to a number of people. He oversaw the jacket design for that project and I composed this traditional march to thank him. Shinya Nakamitsu runs a design company called AXIS: hence the name of the composition.

Cantata BWV 134 belongs to those works in which we can follow particularly clearly Bach's custom of continually altering and improving his works from performance to performance. Although this cantata in the course of its history became a valuable even a particularly festal church cantata it does not disown its secular origin.
