This edition clarifies a performance aspect of Haydn’s Symphony in G major that has long been misunderstood: in m. 1 of the second movement (Largo) the viola violoncello and several wind instrument parts are marked “solo” indicating that they play important motifs or themes and ought to stand out. Contrary to other editions the “solo” marking in the violoncello should not be construed as indicating a solo instrument with the remaining cellos doubling the basses. Rather the cellos should play as a section so as to stand out all the more clearly. Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in large-scalechoral works operas and symphonies this edition is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn ” . Duke Ellington (1889- 1974) was a very successful American pianist conductor composer and arranger. His orchestra existed for decades and was able to survive thanks to the enormous hits that he and his collaborators wrote. Many of those songs now belong to the standard repertoire of jazz musicians.Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967) was arranger and composer with the orchestra from 1939 and also wrote Take the A-Train which became the band�s favourite song from 1941. Many recordings were made of it. Juan Tizol (1900-1984 valve trombone) played with Duke Ellington almost his entire career and composed Latin songs for the orchestra. He is co-composer of Caravan and Perdido.Justlike in the original Duke Ellington concerts the medley begins with Take the A-Train followed by a number of classics from the repertoire of the legendary orchestra. In some songs there are soloists notable a solo on kettledrums in C- Jam Blues. This solo can also be improvised.When rehearsing a lot of attention has to be paid to the drum and bass which together form the rhythm section and drive the orchestra on. The other sections have to be tight and create a coherent swing effect. The swing shouldn�t be too stiff and can vary per song. For example in In a Sentimental Mood the melody can be played almost straight (classically) while the rhythm section continues swinging.

für Oboe und BratscheorVioloncello- “He has very good ideas ” writes Mozart about the excellent Czech oboist viola da gamba player and composer Josef Fiala (1748–1816) in one of his letters. The compositional heritage of Fiala consists of some 120 pieces all except one of them instrumental. They include symphonies concertos and double concertos for various instruments a number of wind instrument partitas and divertimentos chamber music pieces for all manner of ensembles and a total of 17 duets for diverse instruments including one work only partially preserved. Half of them were published during the composer’s lifetime. Both of the duets for oboe and viola or cello were written in Salzburgbetween the years 1778–1785. They are revised and introduced by Miloslav Klement. The publication is part of the old Musica Viva Historica series.
