Although Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) is best known for his collaboration with W.S. Gilbert on their famous operettas he also wrote much instrumental chamber and orchestral music church anthems and around 20 secular part songs. One such song was The Long Day Closes which has remained in the popular repertoire of many male voice and mixed choirs. The melody is a combination of hushed hymn-like reverence and emotional intensity which provides the young band the opportunity to work on dynamics ensemble intonation and balance in ?chorale? style.

Fanfare-This fantastic stirring fanfare was written with the composer?s wish that the young musicians performing it would fly into the bright future like pheasants. The first part of the piece is a fanfare which is suitable for opening ceremonies and the second part is a lush chorale-like movement. Your band can perform both parts together or you could perform each one separately. This short opening work will start any concert in real style.

Elgar’s five Pomp and Circumstance Marches were written between 1901 and 1930 with number 1 undoubtedly being the most popular of the five. King Edward VII told Elgar that the tune would ‘go round the world’ if words were fitted to it. Elgar took the hint and included it (with slight rhythmic changes) in his Coronation Ode of 1902 with words by A. C. Benson. Thus was born Land of Hope and Glory which is now of course an integral part of the annual Last Night of the Proms when the audience (with varying degrees of success!) sing the words along to the original march. In making this piano reduction the arranger has attempted to retain as much of the original version (for string orchestra and harpsichord) as possible to give the soloist a clear idea of what is going on in the orchestra. Therefore certain passages especially in the third movement Elegy are rather tricky and not always easily playable. The composer’s suggests omitting some of the notes in the chords if required or for example when a chord is repeated in succession to play the chord in full on the beat but to play only the outer notes of the chord after the beat. Where necessary spread chords can be played as marked.

Le Verseau- French composer Pierre Ancelin (1934-2001) studied at the conservatories of Aix-en-Provence Marseille and later under Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire. His Scrubland is an exciting collection of five pieces for Oboe and Piano. Ancelin is particularly remembered for founding the National Union of Composers of Music along with Jolivet Lesuer and Sauguet. Composed by Eugène Bozza in 1947 Short Suite In Trio Form Op. 67 is a piece for Oboe Clarinet and Bassoon. This edition features the parts for the three instruments and a full score. This four-movement work is quite difficult and would be perfect for advanced players. A great piece for recitals it is also really interesting to play for each of the three instruments. The four movements are Allegro moderato which starts with the Oboe Allegro vivo Adagio espressivo and Allegro vivo and the piece lasts approximatively 10 minutes. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at theConservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas chamber works and ballets among others.
