This piece was inspired by the composer watching his young son Benny playing ‘soldiers’ with his collection of teddy bears - how appropriate! But it made him think of the many character pieces which take the form of a ‘toy march’ the most notable examples being by Haydn Tchaikovsky and Leon Jessel. Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers is in the form of a ‘patrol’ (starting and ending quietly with a louder middle) and aims to represent a band marching past the listener. In fact where the hall layout permits it it could be possible to add a little choreography to the piece starting and ending with only a few instruments on stage.

The Four Noble Truths are the most basic expression of the teaching of Buddha and therefore still form the guidelines for Buddhists to this day. The four truths are Dukkha which describes times of major stress in our lives - birth aging desire and death; Samudaya which describes those parts of our life that induce stress feeling craving desire; Nirodha which tells us how to eliminate those aspects of our lives which induce stress and Magga which describes the eight didciplines which can help us eliminate the origins of stress from our lives. It can be seen from these over-simplified definitions that the Four Noble Truths fall into two pairs the first two describingthe origins of stress and the second two describing how we can reduce stress. To reflect this the four movements of this work are also combined into two pairs - two quick movements and two slow movements. A fascinating work from this great English composer.

Being an unusual composer of his day Ibert did not attach himself to any of the predominant genres of music of the time. Described as elicit the composer's Deux Interludes for Flute Violin and Harpsichord is pleasantly unusual in instrumentation creating a worthy addition to the classical music repertoire. Ibert stands out as a composer who tackled all styles with equal success his Deux Interludes for Flute Violin and Harpsichord being no exception. With clear separate parts this edition is a must buy for aspiring musicians seeking to expand their repertoire.

Out of the Darkness Into the Light is about optimism. All of us experience disappointments in our lives such failed relationships or the loss of loved ones but the indomitability of the human spirit allows us to overcome such set backs and get through the darker moments. For some faith and religion may be the answer but this piece is more about the internal strength that we can all call upon.Opening in sombre mood the first phase of the work symbolises the doubts we all have about ourselves and our lives. The opening phrase on solo clarinet appears throughout the piece and could be seen as the central idea of the work the human spirit itself. The faster centralsection is about the struggle to overcome the pain we experience and at bar 88 the moment of catharsis occurs. This signals a change of mood and from then on the clarinet motif is transformed into a feeling of joy and optimism. We have entered the light.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Hommage A Bach for Trombone and Piano is an exquisite addition to the repertoire. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1957 Bozza 's Hommage A Bach reflects thecomposer's admiration of the great J. S. Bach. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza 's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

Morning Song features the horn quartet mostly in a soloistic role - indeed there is an accompanied cadenza towards the end of the piece - but there are moments where the horns assume their conventional fanfare band role as harmonic support or playing the counter melody. This expressive composition shows all the versatility of the horn quartet and gives them the chance to be in the spotlight.

Born in Jarrow northeast England in 1949 John Miles was something of a child prodigy learning the piano from the age of five. In the early ’60s he persuaded his father to buy him a guitar and by the end of the decade he had joined a semi-professional band The Influence. The group soon disbanded and by 1969 Miles was recording with his own group The John Miles Band releasing a dozen singles in the early ’70s. In 1975 Miles decided to move to London and secured a deal with Decca Records. By October that year a newly formed band John Miles and Co had released their debut single Highfly but their greatest hit which stormed the British charts in March 1976 was Music.
