Turlough O’Carolan (1670–1738) is considered the prototype of the travelling Irish harpist supplying his continually changing audience with new tunes and poignant stories. His melodies which are steeped in Irish tradition have made him immortal. They have also had a lasting influence on the development of Irish music. Many of his tunes have provided a basis for thousands of later melodies. Stef Minnebo‘s Concert Pitch is a spectacular opening piece. It contains two contrasting sections that flow into one another. The introduction is musically beautiful however it can be performed as background music to a spoken introduction. The conductor would then cue the band to jump into the lively second section and take off!

The Dutch pop idol Rob de Nijs has been a permanent feature of the Dutch pop scene for many years. Our Filip Sandras has made a neat medley of his best known numbers.

This piece tells the story of a conflict between the communities in the valleys around Sörenberg a village in Entlebuch in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. An old legend from the 14th century tells of an attack on Sörenberg by marauding Obwaldners who stole the local cattle. It’s full of spectacular effects and impressive rhythmical and dynamic sequences. Ideal as a contest piece.

Viola- Dvorák’s Violin Concerto was composed between 1879 and 1882 with the active assistance of Joseph Joachim and was issued by the publisher Fritz Simrock Berlin in 1883. Its premiere took place in October of that same year with František Ondrícek as soloist. This new Urtext edition is based on the first edition (score solo Violin part Piano reduction and orchestral parts). It also takes Dvorák’s autograph which served as a master copy for the engraving into consideration. A fresh assessment of Dvorák’s manuscript made it possible to reconstruct several variants ignored in the first and subsequent editions and toclarify ambiguities in the notation and articulation. An important component of our Urtext edition is the original Piano reduction which probably stems from Dvorák himself and in which Joseph Joachim’s fingering is published. Juri Briat has arranged the tunes of the winter Olympic games of the Eighties for a wind orchestra. As always he has chosen original works and arranged them in his own typically colourful way. An ideal opening number for your concert with allure.

The original concept for this work was a suite of short movements each with its own character but by the time the first movement was complete it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores the unsurpassable ability of the euphonium to play lyrically with a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement which is almost bebop in style and shows off the jazzier capabilities of the euphonium. The concerto was composed for the virtuoso soloist Steven Mead. A version for euphonium and piano is also available.
