En plus de soixante ans de carrière ce roi du swing - virtuose du vibraphone (dont il fut le premier jazzman à en faire un instrument soliste) - a joué avec la plupart des autres géants du jazz de Benny Goodman à Charlie Parker de Louis Armstrong à Miles Davis. A Tribute to Lionel est un hommage musical à cet artiste exceptionnel. La partie soliste a bien évidemment été confiée au vibraphone mais peut également être interprétée par la clarinette.
