Born in Jarrow northeast England in 1949 John Miles was something of a child prodigy learning the piano from the age of five. In the early ’60s he persuaded his father to buy him a guitar and by the end of the decade he had joined a semi-professional band The Influence. The group soon disbanded and by 1969 Miles was recording with his own group The John Miles Band releasing a dozen singles in the early ’70s. In 1975 Miles decided to move to London and secured a deal with Decca Records. By October that year a newly formed band John Miles and Co had released their debut single Highfly but their greatest hit which stormed the British charts in March 1976 was Music.

This march from Philip Sparke is in the tradition of the English ceremonial or concert march such as the masterpieces written by Sir Edward Elgar and Sir William Walton. It attempts to continue this tradition with a march for intermediate band that has all the recognisable hallmarks such as broad melodies counter melodies and a nobilmente trio.

Instrumental concertos with orchestral accompaniment hold a special place in the oeuvre of Jirí Pauer (1919-2007). Apart from his Violin Concerto (1959) he wrote three more compositions of the type for wind instruments. The Bassoon Concerto (1949) Oboe Concerto (1954) and Horn Concerto (1957) were all inspired by superb Czech wind soloists motivated by the lack of new repertoire for the respective instruments. The three movements of the Horn Concerto comprise a single structure which alternates between contrasting moods and musical tableaux. In this context he asked the music critic Ludevit Prochazka to return a manuscript copy of the PianoQuintet in A major op. 5 (B 28) composed 15 years earlier. But after thoroughly revising the work he declined to publish it; instead he wrote a new piano quintet in the same key - the famous op. 81. And so the manuscript copy he requested fromProchazka remains the sole source for this early piece of chamber music. Dvoraks first Piano Quintet was never published during his lifetime. Based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. Orchestral parts available in a large format (25.5 x 32.5 cm). Haydn ’s Symphony No.26 received its nickname Lamentazione during his lifetime though it is unclear whether this stems directly from the composer. This work probably originated no later than 1770. Its first and second movements quote excerpts from Gregorian chants used in Holy Week. In Haydn ’s day it was customary to play individual movements in church services and it may be assumed that these two movements were performed and possibly composed independently from each other. Continuing thecollaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in the areas of large-scale choral works operas and symphonies Haydn ’s Symphony No.26 is appearing based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn.
