from the musical Daens-Both “Daens” the movie and “Daens” the musical are based on the well-known book by Louis Paul Boon who along with Hugo Claus is possibly the most important writer of post-war Flanders. Boon was a native of Aalst and a man of the people. In otherwords he was no academic who produced his literature from an ivory tower. He was able like no other to keep his finger on the pulse of the common man. Boon’s writing is packed with true-to-life characters.Just as in most of his other books forhis work about Father Daens Louis Paul Boon took his beloved Aalst as a starting point for an epic story about justice and injustice about life and death. He takes us back to the Aalst of 1900 and submerges us in the raw hopeless life of theworking class. One man takes up the battle against the immense injustice of that period. That man is Father Daens.To a great extent director Stijn Coninx remained faithful to Boon’s words when filming the book although he concentrated more on themiserable life of the working class than on the movement the priest created known as “Daensism”. In an outstanding manner he succeeded in bringing to life reality at the turn of the century.Desperate circumstances“Daens” the musical takes us back tothe Aalst of 1888. Following a conflict with Bishop Stillemans Father Adolf Daens goes back to his hometown of Aalst. He moves in with his brother Pieter Daens the publisher of the periodical “Het Land van Aalst”. The provincial town is also a newhome for country dwellers that have fled poverty. However they have simply exchanged one set of dire circumstances for another because as textile workers they have to work 10 to 12 hours a day 6 days a week. When the local industrialist Borremansfires half of his workforce it is a source of yet more misery. Father Daens takes the suffering of the workers very personally. He makes the acquaintance of Nette Scholiers who has only just turned 17 but is already the breadwinner for a wholefamily. Daens cannot look on helplessly and so he complains about the desperate circumstances in the textile factory in his brother’s paper. An action that does not win him the admiration of Charles Woeste the leader of the Catholic Party and anally of Borremans.Own partyBefore long Daens is summoned to appear before Bishop Stillemans. The latter forbids him to involve himself further with politics and certainly when it concerns actions that risk damaging the interests of the CatholicParty. Father Daens ignores the Bishop’s words. More than that Daens starts up his own political party the Christene Volkspartij or Christian People Party. Daens is able to count on the sympathy of liberals and socialists and is elected as amember of the Belgian parliament. Originally Cornfield Rock was written by Jacob de Haan as a version for male choir. It was based on a text by William Shakespeare on a melody of Thomas Morley (It was a lover and his lass). The original melody however was abandoned completely and in its place Jacob de Haan created a new one in rock style. The title refers to the text: That o’re the green corne fields did passe.

La Prière is a musical fragment that forms part of one of the numerous compositions made by Paul Gilson (1865-1942) for the HaFaBra litterature namely Retour au Pays. Juri Briat took care of the arrangement resulting in a magnificent choral.This piece can be used as study material as well as opening music for concerts or contests.

The words of the Cantata Rejoice in the Lamb are taken from a long poem of the same name. The writer was Christopher Smart an eighteenth century poet deeply religious but of a strange and unbalanced mind.Rejoice in the Lamb was written while Smart was in an asylum and is chaotic in form but contains many flashes of genius.It is a few of the finest passages that Benjamin Britten has chosen to set to music. The main theme of the poem and that of the Cantata is the worship of God by all created beings and things each in its own way.The Cantata is made up of ten short sections. The first sets the theme. The second gives a few examples of one person after another beingsummoned from the pages of the Old Testament to join with some creatures in praising and rejoicing in God. The third is a quiet and ecstatic Hallelujah. In the fourth section Smart takes his beloved cat as an example of nature praising God by being simply what the Creator intended it to be. The same thought is carried on in the fifth section with the illustration of the mouse. The sixth section speaks of the flowers - the poetry of Christ. In the seventh section Smart refers to his troubles and suffering but even these are an occasion for praising God for it is through Christ that he will find his deliverance. The eighth section gives four letters from an alphabet leading to a full chorus in section nine which speaks of musical instruments and music's praise of God. The final section repeats of Hallelujah. This is the Vocal Score of Britten's Festival Cantata for Treble Alto Tenor and Bass soloists Choir and Organ. The text is a setting of words by Christopher Smart written whilst committed to an asylum. It is an exemplary work that reflects a deeply religious motif with the theme of the worship of God by all living beings and things each in their own individual way.

Contest March-Philip Sparke wrote this march for the famous brass band contest held ever year on Whit Friday in Oldham and Saddleworth. Given the competition’s long history (over 120 years) he consciously composed this piece in a very traditional march form. The title The Conqueror refers to Alexander the Great’s nickname as well as being something every band aspires to be!

Between 1996 and 2000 Bärenreiter published scholarly-critical editions of Beethoven 's Nine Symphonies edited by the first class musicologist Jonathan Del Mar. The editorial process was a huge undertaking because of the complex source situation regarding Beethoven 's Symphonies culminating in the Choral Symphony (No.9) which came down to the publisher in nearly 20 different sources. So it was not surprising that Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition caused a considerable stir in the music world. Since publication Del Mar's edition enjoys the unabashed praise of conductors performers and critics alike and has become the most widely used publication ofthe Beethoven Symphonies which can be heard not only every day in concert halls but also on CD recordings by John Eliot Gardiner David Zinman Jos van Immerseel and Claudio Abbado.
