Celebration' was written for the baroque violinist Maya Homburger in 1994. Its writing coincided with the composition of 'Ceremony' for violin and tape and some of the articulations are common to both pieces. The piece is like an extended cadenza with all the implications of rubato and individual expression open to the performer.

Orpheus With His Lute is a work by Thomas Hyde for Unaccompanied SATB Choir. Dedicated to the memory of the late John McCabe this work is a setting of lines from Shakespeare's Henry VIII. A full performance lasts around 2 minutes. A review in the July/August issue of Choir and Organ magazine stated ' Hyde prioritises communication of the text in a direct manner and the work is only two minutes long but here the style is a perfect recreation of the mid/late 20th-century English partsong.

'Berceuse was commissioned by the Birmingham Chamber Music Society for their Diamond Jubilee Season 2011/12 – the first performance was given by John McCabe on 18th February 2012 at the Adrian Boult Hall Birmingham Conservatoire. It is dedicated to John and Mary Joubert. The piece derives from three sources: the idea of the classical/romantic Berceuse (though in this case not so much a lullaby for children as is sometimes the case) the notion of two alternating themes of equal importance and the style of piano writing in which the main part of the melody is heard in the left hand rather than being right-hand tune plus left-hand accompaniment. The two mainthemes are closely related in style and content and towards the end they are heard together simultaneously in simplified form quietly revealing the dual texture for which the piece has been striving.' John McCabe 's Pueblo for solo Double Bass. Duration: approx. 7 minutes. Pueblo is an off-shoot of a series of compositions inspired by desert country and it was commissioned by Leon Bosch with the aid of funds provided by North West Arts. The piece is continous falling into several sections and is largeley based on the high circling motif heard at the start and referred to again in the harmonics at the close. It is prefaced by the following quotation from Scenes in American Deserta by Reyner Banham published by Thames and Hudson: 'Clouds high and flat were now building up in thesky the wind was settling to silent calm the weather was very cold and the stream through the center of the pueblo was almost frozen across the Indians chipping out ice to melt down for water.' The aim in writing the piece was to express in musical terms a response to the vivid picture of a scene relating to life in the American desert conveyed by Reyner Banham's text. Although not numbered among other Desert works this belongs to this family of compositions along with another Banham setting written for the King's Singers Scenes In America Deserta. - John McCabe

Enrique Granados (1867-1916) was a Spanish composer and pianist who studied in Barcelona and Paris and whose life was tragically cut short by the First World War. The nationalist style which dominated his early output is often seen to be epitomised by the 1890 work 12 Danza Española a collection of Spanish dances originally for the solo Piano. Andaluza is No. 5 from 12 Danza Española and has been transcribed here for Voice with Guitar by the Basque arranger Jose De Azpiazu (1912-1986) setting a poem by Luis Munoz Llorente.
