Marching Winds was commissioned as the set piece for the Youth Festival Singapore 2010 a competition for all the youth orchestras in Singapore. As the title indicates it is written in the form of a march. The opening fanfare leads directly to the modal main theme. It is contrasted by a second legato theme which builds to the climax of the piece. The main theme makes an appearance again before the piece comes to a finish.

One Single Light is an intimate and thoughtful song for two-part voices and piano composed by Dave and Jean Perry. The vocal lines flow well against each other and are supported by a simple and well-voiced piano accompaniment.

for Bassoon (or Baritone Saxophone) and Concert Band- Wind in the Reeds was commissioned by Deena Draycott in memory of John Watson an army bandsman teacher and bassoonist. Wind in the Reeds is both a tribute and lasting memorial to John. The piece is largely pastoral in nature evoking images conjured up by the ‘play on words’ in the title but includes a faster central section which exploits other aspects of the character of the bassoon. Transitions between the various sections of the piece are achieved through a series of accompanied cadenzas for the soloist.

Boon was a native of Aalst and aman of the people. In other words he was no academic who produced his literature from an ivory tower. He was able like no other to keep his finger on the pulse of the common man. Boon�s writing is packed with true-to-life characters.Just asin most of his other books for his work about Father Daens Louis Paul Boon took his beloved Aalst as a starting point for an epic story about justice and injustice about life and death. He takes us back to the Aalst of 1900 and submerges us in theraw hopeless life of the working class. One man takes up the battle against the immense injustice of that period. That man is Father Daens.To a great extent director Stijn Coninx remained faithful to Boon�s words when filming the book although he concentrated more on the miserable life of the working class than on the movement the priest created known as �Daensism�. In an outstanding manner he succeeded in bringing to life reality at the turn of thecentury.Desperate circumstances�Daens� the musical takes us back to the Aalst of 1888. Following a conflict with Bishop Stillemans Father Adolf Daens goes back to his hometown of Aalst. He moves in with his brother Pieter Daens thepublisher of the periodical �Het Land van Aalst�. The provincial town is also a new home for country dwellers that have fled poverty. However they have simply exchanged one set of dire circumstances for another because as textileworkers they have to work 10 to 12 hours a day 6 days a week. When the local industrialist Borremans fires half of his workforce it is a source of yet more misery. Father Daens takes the suffering of the workers very personally. He makes theacquaintance of Nette Scholiers who has only just turned 17 but is already the breadwinner for a whole family. Daens cannot look on helplessly and so he complains about the desperate circumstances in the textile factory in his brother�spaper. An action that does not win him the admiration of Charles Woeste the leader of the Catholic Party and an ally of Borremans.Own partyBefore long Daens is summoned to appear before Bishop Stillemans. Le cortège du roi Renaud is a suite in five parts. It is based on tales that originated in southern European folk songs dating back as far as the 16th century. A large portion of these songs are of the genre Complaintes songs in which the text gives a detailed description of events having a generally criminal or macabre character. The most familiar song to feature the tales of Roi Renaud is Fualdes consisting of 48 verses.The first part of the suite is based on the song La Porcheronne (The Swineherd). It telis the story of a young woman forced by her mother-in-law to tend pigs while her husband is away fighting in the war. She is freed only when her husband returns sevenyears later.The next part tells the story of La mrquise Empoisonnée (The Poisoned Marquise). A marquise is coerced by her king to become his mistress. The jealous queen poisons her by means of a bouquet of deadly scented fiowers.Despite having the character of a merry dance the third part La maumariée vengee (The Avenged Wedding) expresses the touching story of Queen Clotilde persecuted for her refusal to live according to the Aryan beliefs.La belle engloutie (The Swallowed Beauty) relates the tale of the young wife of King Renaud. She cannot imagine a life without her husband who was mortally wounded in the war and begs the earth to open and swallow her up so thst she may rejoin her love.The gruesome content of the final part Le tueur de femmes (The Wife Killer) bears a strong resembiance to the tale of Bluebeard. The story is about a young wife in danger of being drowned in a pond by her husband which is what happened to her 13 predecessors. Thanks to her cunning she manages to turn the tables and contrive her husband's demise.

Blazon est une œuvre de commande pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Niederbrechen en Allemagne. Elle fut offerte comme cadeau d’adieu à Michael Steiner le directeur musical qui quittait la formation en 2009 après onze années passées à sa tête. Sous son impulsion les musiciens ont accompli d’immenses progrès. Lui dédier une pièce en guise de remerciement s’imposait comme une évidence. La création de l’œuvre a eu lieu le 17 mai 2009. L’orchestre était dirigé pour la dernière fois par son chef. Blazon permet d’exploiter le talent des cuivres et des percussions. La pièce s’ouvre avec une grande fanfare pleine d’énergie qui chemine à travers les pupitresdes trompettes des cors et des cuivres graves. Un changement de tonalité fait apparaître un thème en legato joué d’abord par les bois puis repris par l’orchestre en entier. La fanfare initiale revient soulignée par des motifs ornementés dans les bois pour mener l’œuvre vers sa fin brillante.

Viola- Lobet den Herrn alle Heiden BWV 230 - Motet for four-part mixed choir. In Bach’s voluminous output of music the motets form a small group of modest proportions particularly as compared to the 200 or so surviving cantatas.
