15 Progressive Duets for Flutes-Philip Sparke’s Super Duets is the third volume of a progressive series of duet books that takes the young wind player from beginner to accomplished musician. Following on from the first books in the series ( Starter Duets Skilful Duets ) this collection contains longer pieces that are suitable for the more advanced player. Specifically tailored for each instrument Super Duets takes the player into new keys with new technical and musical challenges and contains pieces suitable for concert or recital. The series provides invaluable additional material to complement any teaching method. The early stages of learning any instrument are undoubtedly the most important. A good teacher is of course essential but it is also vital to have stimulating study material which complements your choice of teaching method and is carefully tailored to introduce learning and playing skills in a structured manner. In writing this collection Philip Sparke worked with many instrumental teachers to discover exactly what was required for each instrument to help players develop the full range of skills whilst still having fun. Each book of this collection is specifically tailored for the developing musician and focuses on study solos and duets aimed to improve specific technical andmusical demands of the instrument.

The Missa K.257 bears the non-authentic dating 1776 and was presumably composed at the end of 1776 or in the first half of 1777. Like K.262 (246a) it is designated in Leopold Mozart’s handwriting as a Missa longa on the cover page of an early composite manuscript containing the five masses in C major. K.257 is listed there as the last work. The designation “Missa longa” was intended to point out that this was an extensive full-scale mass. Normally it would have been called a Missa solemnis but Mozart for unknown reasons did not make use of this customary nomenclature. The name “Credo Mass” is taken from the acclamations of “Credo” that constantly interrupt thelike-named movement. The Mass is remarkable for its density of invention within the narrowest of confines. Further its instrumental accompaniment has an almost chamber-music quality that emerges time and again into almost symphonic proportions. Aaron Copland composed the Danzon Cubano in the fall of 1942 as a birthday piece to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the League of Composers. In its original form for two pianos it was first played by Leonard Bernstein and the composer at the Town Hall testimonial Salute to the League of Composers in December 1942 and was later recorded by Copland and Leo Smit for Concert Hall Society Records. This new version for solo piano has been arranged by Leo Smit.Copland has scored the work for orchestra and the premiere of this version took place in 1946 by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Reginald Stewart conducting. The composer has written:The danzon is a well known dance form inCuba and other Latin American countries. It is not a fast dance however and should not be confused with the rhumba or conga. It fulfills a fuction rather similar to the waltz in our own dance providing contrast for the more animated numbers. Its special charm is a certain naive sophistication alternating in mood between passages of thythmic precision and a kind of non-sentimental sweetness. The Danzon Cubanon is based on melodic and rhythmic fragments heard by the composert during several visits to Cuba. The danzon is normally constructed in two halves which are thematically independent. This is in no sense intended to be an authentic danzon but only on American tourist's impression of an absorbing Cuban dance form. A Piano solo transposition of Copland's lively and exotic dance. Composed in 1942 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the League Of Composers. Inspired by rhythmic and melodic fragments heard by Copland during his visits to Latin American countries.

Euphonium Concerto No. 3- Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Mörschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and now a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead’s special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village ofMörschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title Diamond Concerto . Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer’s Music for Battle Creek including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written at Steven Mead’s suggestion in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6 Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and brass band (AMP 354-030).

for Oboe and Concert Band-Composer Philip Sparke decided to use the idea of white to write a piece that was both bright and light in terms of harmony colour and orchestration. He achieves this by using simple major and minor chords and emphasising the pure transparent timbres of the upper woodwinds of the band. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument. A perfect way to put your oboist in the spotlight.
