The text of Susanni is a translation of Martin Luther’s hymn of 1535 Vom Himmel hoch . The music is based loosely upon the well-known chorale melody which at times is quoted in full in both voices and organ. Except where indicated singers should adopt a legato style especially in the repeated quaver patterns. In the bars which appear to be in compound time conductors should beat in crotchets. An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs including sacred and secular works from simple four-part settings to more expansive yetaccessible repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. Bill Ives has spent his life in choral music – as a singer conductor teacher and composer (writing as Grayston Ives). He was a chorister at Ely Cathedral and later studied music at Cambridge taking composition lessons with Richard Rodney Bennett. After Cambridge he sang in Guildford Cathedral Choir before joining the King’s Singers with whom he recorded and performed worldwide. For eighteen years he directed the Choir of Magdalen College Oxford. During his tenure the choir earned a Grammy nomination for a disc of music by Orlando Gibbons and gave the première of Paul McCartney’s Ecce Cor Meum written especially for them. In 2008 his work as a composer and conductor of church music was recognised with the award of a Lambeth DMus and a Fellowship of the Royal School of Church Music.

Co-commissioned by the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy and by Edward and Sarah Armitage to commemorate their 20th wedding anniversary. This Missa Brevis (‘short mass’) was written at the request of Mr and Mrs Edward Armitage and the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy. The four movements are based on a single six-note phrase taken from the plainsong Te Deum laudamus (tonus simplex) bearing the text ‘Speravimus in te’. This motif repeats many times in the chant but these words are used for its final appearance ending the phrase ‘O Lord let thy mercy be upon us as we have hoped in thee'. This miniature cell is used to create musical material in a variety of ways: inversion retrograde inversion augmentation all these in combination etc. It is also employed as a device to form the principal harmonic flavour. The Mass is designed for both liturgical and concert use. The Kyrie alludes to the Speravimus motif with the Gloria more strictly developing its possibilities. The Sanctus and Agnus reuse and develop material from the Gloria and it is hoped therefore that the piece will be easily learned practical and useful for regular performance. Matthew Martin's Missa Speravimus for SATB and Organ. Co-commissioned by the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy and by Edward and Sarah Armitage to commemorate their 20th wedding anniversary. Duration: c. 10 minutes

Mozart wrote The Magic Flute as a singspiel opera in two acts in 1791 when it received its first set of performances in Vienna and from that time it has featured as one of the most popular works in operatic repertoire. This love duet with its stuttering ‘pa pa pa’ occurs almost at the end of the opera when the comical couple Papageno and Papagena finally are assured of each other’s love. It is a light-hearted excerpt appropriate for recital or encore.

Victor Hely-Hutchinson (1901 - 1947) was a British composer who was born in South Africa. He was recognised at an early age as a musical prodigy and could sing notes by ear before he could talk. His setting of Old Mother Hubbard was written c.1912 while he was still a pupil at Heatherdown Prep School. It is well-known for being a parody of Handel’s operatic style. Old Mother Hubbard was arranged for TTBB male Voice chorus by J. Michael Diack and first published in 1932. A timeless and amusing classic it is sure to go down well with any audience!
