A student of Gabriel Fauré and Louis Verne at the Paris Conservatoire Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) owes her aura to an exceptional teaching career spanning nearly 75 years during which she trained the most illustrious musicians from Copland toGlass not to forget Bernstein or Gardiner. In the past few years her creative work long considered negligible has finally been escaping from oblivion thanks to the untiring work of the Centre Nadia et Lili Boulanger directed by AlexandraLaederich. It is at her instigation that the publication of Nadia Boulangers songs has continued in chronological order: after a first collection (HA 9725) devoted to the youthful works brought out during her lifetime by the publisher Hamelle the secondvolume presented here exclusively features unpublished works. First of all it contains three Romantic mélodies in German on poems by Heine – a surprising choice given that the composer felt more attracted by Symbolist poetry. This is attested toby the other songs in the collection on verses by Paul Verlaine Maurice Maeterlinck and Georges Delaquys three poets who were part of the literary pantheon of Nadia and her sister Lili. One will discover treasures of refinement and sensitivity intheir musical settings. Pour Quator á Cordes- Born in 1947 Laurent Duvillier-Wable trained under pianist Suzanne Joly and studied composition with Michel Puig. The latter a student of René Leibowitz introduced him to the mysteries of Schonberg and Webern's twelve-note composition. To create a coherent œuvre Duvillier-Wable drew on the array of possibilities offered by chamber music in his series of six Sonatas composed between 1992 and 2007. Sonata IV For String Quartet was written in 1994 the year his father - painter René Duvillier a friend of Charles Estienne and André Breton - fell gravely ill. Divided into four movements thecomposition contains two beautifully expressive musical references: the Lamento religioso refers to Bach's Passion according to Saint Matthew by quoting the choral 'Was ist die Ursache aller solcher Plagen' (No.19: What is the cause of all this suffering?) when Jesus distressed by his imminent agony asks his disciples to watch over him. The Agitato final borrows the inexorable 'Must it be? It must!' theme from Beethoven's Quartet No.16 in F that crowns this poignant work.

Pour Alto Saxophone et Piano- Born to an Italian father and a French mother Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) divided his music studies between the Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Conservatoire de Paris where he was taught by Henri Busser and Henri Rabaud. His chamber music compositions reveal a marked predilection for wind instruments as reflected in Fantaisie pastorale for oboe and piano (1939) and New-Orléans for bass saxhorn and piano (1944). During his stay a few years earlier at the Villa Medici in Rome (1936) Bozza had written his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano - a free adaptation of the third movement of JohannSebastian Bach's Organ Pastorale in F major BWV 590. This expansive and nostalgic melody which unfolds over a regular meter has become one of the most widely played Saxophone pieces in the world. Having enjoyed such success éditions Leduc has decided to supplement its republication with an audio version that will enable saxophonists to carry out full-scale practice.

Between the late 19th century and the early 1960s French music experienced a Golden Age during which the flute played a prominent role: this age-old instrument played by fauns and shepherds spun numerous arabesques whose sensuous contours seemed to celebrate the mysterious connections between nature and the imagination (Debussy). It was therefore quite tempting to draw on the rich catalogue of French works from the Editions Leduc and Heugel and put together this collection of pieces for flautists in the fourth year of study and up. It's simply impossible to resist the compelling lyricism that floats up from such celebrated pages asFauré's Sicilienne or the Pièce en forme de Habanera a composition by Ravel superbly transcribed by Theodore Doney. Philippe Gaubert's Orientale and Sicilienne - two bestsellers - are also included. Original pieces such as the Aria for flute and piano by Roussel rub shoulders with delightful arrangements such as the one by Marcel Moyse based on Jacques Ibert's gentle Histoires or the successful adaptation of Hahn's à Chloris ; while famous pieces - like Debussy's Le Petit Nègre - nestle against a few rare gems (Pierné Bozza) that are utterly charming.
