Handel wrote the famous Dixit Dominus with the text of Psalm 109 during his time in Italy in c. 1707. Although he was only 22 years old the work already demonstrates his wide spectrum of compositional abilities which are later fully realized in his operas and oratorios. Central to this work are the six choral movements which – with their polyphonic structure – are closely related to German choral music of the 17th century. The first Urtext edition BA 4002 based on the Halle Handel Edition was published in 1960. At that time no critical commentary was published so that in cases of doubt the basis on which editorialdecisions were made was not officially recorded. A new complete edition volume (BA 10704/01) due to be published in 2013 will include a detailed foreword providing information on the genesis and the first performance of this work as well as information on the psalm on which this work is based and on performance practice. In addition several facsimiles pages will be included giving a view into the source material. The critical commentary will provide a detailed insight into all the available sources and how they have been passed down. This newly revised Urtext performing edition offers a thorough revision of this frequently-performed work and meets all the requisites of a scholarly-critical edition. Former readings in the old edition regarding a small number of pitches but mostly basso continuo figures and the underlying text have now been able to be amended on the basis of the new findings. In the new edition the work appears in nine movements – no longer eight – which reflects the composer's intentions. The new performance material is not compatible with the old one. Britten once referred to this work as his 'real Opus 1' as the themes in the work are themes from his childhood. At school he was expelled for a 'shocking' essay he had written in which he had opposed the practice of blood sports and suggested that the brutal effect of them was in fact a cause of war. In 1892 Josef Suk (1874-1935) a mere 18 years of age contributed his piece Melody to a collection of simple works for Violin (for two three or four Violins and for Violin with Piano accompaniment) called The Young Violinist published by the Prague-based firm Jos. R. Vilimek (several books issued per year). This short charming and technically undemanding piece for young violinists which is possibly more familiar to Czech audiences in arrangements for other combinations of instruments (Violin and Piano or solo Piano) was published once again in its original version for two Violins to mark the 70th anniversary of Suk 's death(2005). The whereabouts of the autograph of this work is unknown; the editor of the new edition Zdenek Nouza based his revisions on the original carefully prepared edition from 1892. The bowings are Suk 's own (he was an excellent violinist) but no fingerings have been added since the piece can be played by violinists of varying technical proficiency; first position alone would suffice however a fuller richer sound would be gained with greater mastery of the instrument.

from Hymn of the Highlands - for Bb Piccolo Trumpet (or Eb Cornet/Trumpet) Solo-The seven-movement suite for brass band Hymn of the Highlands was commissioned by David King and the Yorkshire Building Society Band and provides a series of themed movements which can act as a half-concert featuring a band’s soloists. Flowerdale is one of the solo movements. This solo is also available with piano accompaniment edition no. AMP 285.

The Celtic poem The Voyage of Bran was the inspiration for this fantasy work by Bert Appermont. The subject of this composition is Febal who - together with his companions - travels to the ‘otherworld’ also known as the Island of the Blessed where he finds nothing but sun and prosperity. The sections called Isle of Joy Land of the Women and The Feast intermingle with Song of the Otherworld which acts as a sort of leitmotif.

He titled its three movements “Das Lebewohl” (The Farewell) “Die Abwesenheit” (The Absence) and “Das Wiedersehn” (The Return) in reference to the hasty departure of his good friend and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria who fled Vienna with the imperial family on 4 May 1809 to escape Napoleon’s approaching troops. Beethoven referred to op. 81a as a “characteristic sonata” not in the sense that it had an underlying programme but because it lent musical expression to his feelings. He reacted angrily when his publisher printed French translations of its title and movement headings.
