American Traditional- The VOCES8 singles' series includes songs for which the group is particularly well known in choral arrangements produced specifically for VOCES8. This beautiful folk song was commissioned as part of our fifth anniversary celebrations in 2012 and was included in our EP In the Beginning' and on our US concert tour. It has always been a fun challenge to perform with gorgeous flowing lines and a great opening solo for the bass. Our annual visit to sing for friends in the Shenandoah Valley is never complete without a rendition of this arrangement; performing it at Abbey Road Studios (the film can be found on YouTube) was also an unforgettableexperience.

In 1880 Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert.

Little Suite for Flexible Band-This short “cool” suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.Because of the four-part instrumentation School's Cool is suitable for smaller strengths taking into account that it is important to divide parts evenly among the players. Alsoincludes an ad-lib keyboard/piano part to support the ensemble.

Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance.

Dorogoj Dlinnojn-The origin of the song Piet Swerts arranged for concert band in Russian Gipsy Song probably lies with Russian gypsies who know it under the title Dorogoj Dlinnojn and who ardently consider it their mental property.The melody of this Russian folk song is better known under the title Those Were the Days My Friend the song that singer Mary Hopkins made famous in 1968. Within a year after she had issued this song well over five million records of it had been sold. There are also versions in French (Les temps des fleurs) Spaans (Qué tiempo tan feliz) Italian (Quelli erano giorni) and German (An jenem Tag) of this song full of nostalgia about the “good old days.”
