Although you have the title reference to the Farewell Symphony Haydn's Symphony No. 45 Bystrom's approximations are being made in a subtle way similar to her free interpretation of literary works. You will not find any direct thematic connections between Bystrom and Haydn. Bystrom's Haydn inspiration comes in form of the various titles which have been given to a lotof Haydn symphonies in the post-Haydn era. Bystrom wanted to go in sort of an opposite direction: To compose music based on Haydnish symphonic titles. A kind of symphonic Haydn catalogue appears in the movements. Farewell Variations consist of fourteen variations of Bystrom's own thematics. The work begins in sighing and broken phrases - like the shadow of a dance. The titles of the variations lead to the description of daily events starting with morning. A day of Haydn! The last variation farewell ends with the musicians playing on by on. As such there is no story but the titles are the main focus here. Bystrom says that she musically tried to capture some of Haydn's ease and insights. Tony Lundman

Moroccan Fantasy was originally two pieces I wrote in the 1980s Shiraz and Gentle Dreams. Then in 1999 'star pupil' saxophonist Simon Haram wanted a new piece so I wrote Moroccan Fantasy based on the earlier pieces extending the harmonies of Gentle Dreams and giving Shiraz more of a Reggae feel. Young Scottish saxophonist Rowan Hawitt then heard Simon's recording and wanted me to make piano and sax reduction so here is Moroccan Fantasy in various arrangements for solo wind instrument and piano. All the pedal dynamic and tempo markings are suggestions only. All my music can be played in many different ways-the main thing is to make it your own and express yourself. Enjoy! Some believe it is the mad hallucinations of a drug addict (could be Poe himself) others see it as Poe´s equivalent of Dante´s INFERNO – a tale from the Underworld. One thing is certain though. DREAMLAND is a ”fantasy” the vision of a dreamvoyager arriving at and staying in a mythical location beyond and between space and time a place of strange majesty and surreal spectacles such as: “Mountains toppling evermore into seas without a shore”. At the same time it is a“peaceful soothing region” – a mystical ”wonderland” not unlike the fabled Eldorado whichis mentioned in the poem.
