This well-known text attributed to Richard of Chichester and adeptly amended by Alan Hommerding is set for unison voices with the option of a second part. It is simple but still affords room for a small choir (or children's choir) to improve: some large intervals meter changes and the necessity of watching the conductor carefully. Following the dynamic and tempo markings will insure a perfomance that lives up to the dolce nature of the anthem. Accompaniment is organ (preferred) or piano: the flexibility required for a sensitive presentation would be a good task for a student. Duration 2:30

Day of Arising

Karen Marrolli provides an original melody for a text first published anonymously in London in 1878. Set in four parts with a fair amount of unison singing the almost-folk-like tune is singable and satisfying. The text speaks of God's unending love which reaches for us even as we think we are the ones reaching out. Duration: 2:15

A mysterious introduction using keyboard optional bells and organ gives way to a slow lyrical setting of the text in 6/8 meter. Almost like a courtly dance the tempo follows the spirit of the text now a little faster now relaxing. Material from the intro returns then the musical material is almost through-composed reflecting the emotional arch of the words. Duration: 3:30

Anthem for the Mandatum-Scored for unaccompanied SATB choir with tenor soloist the text is appointed in the Book of Common Prayer to take place during the footwashing. The piece is useful at any Holy Thursday/Maundy Thursday service. Brief sections of chordal chanting on text give this a liturgical and formal feel. Composer Terre Johnson sets an adaptation of Isaiah 40:21 in the first person so it appears as if God is speaking through the choir in this anthem of reassurance. The violin and clarinet sometimes support and sometimes soar above the choir. Easy unison writing makes this a useful and satisfying offering especially appropriate for the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany Year B. Duration: 3:00

Love Me

The original composition by Randall Thompson (1899-1984) published in 1928 is for SSAA/SSAA Chorus. A version for SATB/SATB Chorus was published in 1986. The present TTBB arrangement remains true to the treble version lowering all voice parts one octave. This version for double TTBB chorus is useful under a wide variety of circumstances. It could be used as a Palm Sunday introit or procession. It is a great teaching piece for a school group or TTBB choir festival. It could be doubled on a double quartet of instruments. This piece is a fast joyous outburst. The initial lines “I am wild I will sing to the trees” set the jubilant tone. The perpetual motion of the syllabic step-wise vocal lines is punctuated by staccato chords and eventually high arpeggio figures in the accompaniment. That was the question Dr. Joe Miller and Anne Sears of Westminster Choir College asked of singers and audience members at the Westminster Choir’s 2017 Tour concerts whose program focused on the opportunities and challenges each day presents to us. This piece is a web of several of those responses gathered in four parts: the first about our immediate surroundings the second describing our need for beauty and hope the third a potpourri of actions linked with values and the final a broad statement about our notes “in the great choir of humankind.” Duration: 3:45
