Impressions of a Village- Bliss: Impressions of a Village is a spectacular test piece by one of the most renowned brass band composers in Holland Jacob de Haan. It contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The first movement is in a very classical style which captures the village’s history appropriately. The entire band joins in as the small river approaches an ancient castle. The third movement contains lots of interesting rhythms portraying the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the village.

This work was composed as a commission by the Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band to commemorate their 40th annual concert. The composition is a march-style work that begins with a chorale based on a theme from the school song—a distinctive motif that reappears in the middle section. Tetsuya Kashino a graduate of the high school is a band coach and has a deep friendship with the composer. Kashino named the work Scent of Spring which reflects two distinct meanings—firstly in Japanese a part of the band’s own name and also “a premiere in Spring”. Scent of Spring is a bright and optimistic piece of music suitable to perform on various occasions.

Arthur Pryor (1870-1942) was one of the best-known trombonists and bandsmen of his day. Trombone soloist for John Philip Sousa's celebrated bandpl beginning in 1892 he later functioned as assistant conductor of the Sousa band (1894-1903) before starting his own ensemble. His more than 300 compositions include novelty tunes ragtime pieces and operettas but of course he is best remembered today for his virtuosic solos for his own instrument. This book collects eight of his most popular solos in one volume and includes Blue Bells of Scotland Fantastic Polka The Little Chief (Polka Caprice) Love's Enchantment (Valse de Concert) Thoughts of Love and more. This is a book everytrombonist will want to have in his or her library. Arthur Pryor was one of the most popular bandsmen of his day. He was one of the first solo performers to use phonograph recordings to preserve his performances. To this day his recordings of his own works are considered to be some of the best Trombone performances ever recorded. Pryor 's works for Trombone are melodic idiomatic and virtuosic. This collection preserves many of his best known compositions like Thoughts of Love and Blue Bells ofScotland but also makes available once again some of his other delightful works.
