The Modal Column is a cycle of paired pieces for piano starting from the classical structure- prelude-fugue - used by Bach in Das wohltemperierte Klavier. The modes that are being used have a relatively simple octavizing structure hence an almost infinite variety of combinations that can generate a large number of pieces impossible to exhaust by a composer. Therein lies the idea of a column in the sense given by Brancusi i.e. an endless succession of modules. In the vision of the author the mechanism of the mode is a secondary (ancillary) aspect the primary goal is deciphering the ethos incorporated in it. The prelude-fugue structure hypostatizesthe musical discourse at the two possible extremes. free-constructed. While Romanian music rules in free areas like any old music with an (especially oral) tradition the constructed pieces start from Dutch (Flemish) or Venetian polyphony which precedes the idea of fugue understood as a technology of the movement (dynamics) of sound after the models of Giovanni Gabrieli or Ockeghem. The Modal Column is first of all the presentation of a melodic world but as the subtitle indicates also an investigation into the ethos of Romanian music. The forms in which the pieces are thought are simple non-ostentatious the whole cycle being in fact a musical workshop whose better parts may be worth including in ampler works. Before the succinct description of the six couples in Books I and II a few observations necessary from a musicological point of view: 1. The modes are rich in nostalgia with even graver nuances in the livelier movements. 2. It is well-known that all the columns - Egyptian obelisks ancient ornamental columns - have scenarios engraved on them. Trajan's Column describes the wars against the Dacians and their defeat. George Calinescu says 'Trajan's Column is beautiful but let us not forget that the Dacians are in chains on it.' The Romanian melos is millennia-old and was but little influenced by historical

Composed between 1850 and 1854 L'Enfance Du Christ was first performed under Berlioz 's direction in 1854. As suggested by its subtitle the work is in three parts; Herod's Dream; The Flight into Egypt; The Arrival at Sais and is scored for seven solo voices chorus and orchestra. The singing text appears in French German English. Unlike much of Berlioz 's work the music is restrained lyrical and delicate. This is an excellent edition at a moderate price of a great masterpiece of sacred music.

from L'elisir d'amore- Una Furtiva Lagrima is a brilliant arrangement by Jacob de Haan of the aria from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) for concert band. The subject of this song is the power of love: Nemorino the main character of the opera sings the aria as he notices that his love potion is starting to take effect on his beloved. A furtive tear (Una Furtiva Lagrima) betrays his beloved’s feelings towards him in this emotional piece.

Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten- Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled ‘Trostlied’ literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach’s use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan’s arrangement the choral is heard twice once alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time without interruption reflecting the composer’s original intention - a song of consolation.

George Butterworth (1885-1916) was an English composer who died at a very young age leaving behind few compositions. One of his best known and regularly played works is The Banks of Green Willow . People who have studied his work agree that Butterworth displayed great potential which would have flourished were it not for his untimely death. Duncan Wilson’s arrangement makes Butterworth’s imagination accessible to everyone!

Until recently Sammartini's known compositions for recorder consisted of the Concerto in F for Descant Recorder and some editions of his Trio Sonatas are scored for two Treble Recorders and Bass. However the discovery of two sets of solo sonatas attributed to Sammartini has brought to light a wealth of music for the Recorder a selection of which is given in this excellent edition.
