Few operas have had such a remarkable history as Mussorgsky's masterpiece Boris Godunov . It exists in no less than three complete versions by the composer himself as well as posthumous editions and orchestrations by Rimsky-Korsakov (from which this arrangement is taken) Shostakovich and others. The Coronation Scene is set in the Square of the Moscow Kremlin between the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Cathedral of Archangel Michael the year is 1598. After being crowned as Tsar Boris Godunov acknowledges the people's acclamations and the bells of the two cathedrals as well as many churches within the vicinity can beheard ringing out across St Petersburg. Twelve Astrological Preludes were written over a period of roughly two years and several were broadcast on BBC Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night as well as in other concerts. Aquarius was written in 1994 as a filler to a popular BBC solo piano series of the time called At the Piano. It was named Aquarius for programming purposes and as Elms left the studio the producer called after him 'Only eleven to go' – and so Twelve Astrological Preludes came into being. The preludes which run in the usual cycle are based upon two melodic strands and there is one piece in each of the twelve major keys. The character and style of each prelude alludes to certaincharacter traits of its particular birth sign and each piece bears the initials of a friend born under that particular sign. Each prelude is prefaced by a printed description of some of the general characteristics deemed to be associated with that sign. These are of course generalisations! Some preludes show a little deference to some of my favourite 'masters'. Elms has recorded Twelve Astrological Preludes for the Herald label and they are available on the CD Moody Moves together with other pieces of his chamber music including the piano sextet from which the CD takes its name. This composition of Marc Cunningham has four parts and takes place on a sunny day in a picturesque town. 1. Promenade Many people walk through the city. The band passes through the streets. People are strolling along the avenues and amorous couples are sitting on a park bench. 2. Lovey Dovey One of these couples is knee-deep in love. 3. Crispy and Creamy Here the contrasts between a crisp staccato section in two-four time signature and a smooth legato section in three-four time signature are depicted. Is Crispy the boy and Creamy the girl? 4. Farewell In the last particle the couple says goodbye. We still think back tothe walk through the city. It sounds a little less happy now. Not everyone is good at saying goodbye sometimes a tear flows.

Jan Van der Roost and the commissioner of this work have strong personal ties making By the River a very personal work for both of them. The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region.The next movement a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. Though the work shares the same instrumentation which has become popular among new music ensembles Schiff's work is a celebration of popular song and dance styles from the mid-1910's arranged in a suite that makes an ideal curtain-raiser for Pierrot concerts.
