Longfellow's poem The Day is Done speaks of evening as the time when poetry and music come alive and soothe the cares of day. The musical setting presents the opening lyrics in the children’s voices: The day is done and the darkness falls from the wings of night. These phrases or slight variations thereof return as refrains throughout the song. The verses alternate between the men’s and women’s voices with the children interjecting refrains or offering commentary in the background. Finally the children interrupt the SATB dialogue with exclamations of a song! a song! a song! These lead to the climax of the song given to the children’s chorus singing And the nightshall be filled with music. All voices then join together in celebration: Our song shall fill the night. The accompaniment (originally composed for piano later adapted for flute strings and percussion) delights in text-setting with sparkling arpeggios depicting the celestial harmonies and filigree patterns for the star-filled night sky. Flourish for Fanfare was commissioned by Fanfare CWO Groningen to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. It opens with a fanfare on flugel horns and trumpets under saxophone trills which gradually subside to introduce a trio for the trombones. This builds and leads back to the opening fanfare which is interrupted by a slower hymn-like passage on lower brass. A saxophone chorale follows and is repeated by the full band leading to a dramatic molto vivo . The trombones then introduce a new theme derived from their original trio which is developed until the horns take centre stage and introduce a change of mood. This builds to a climax before a contrasting themeemerges on saxes and euphoniums. The trombone theme then returns to introduce a triumphant version of the saxophone chorale which drives the work back to a coda based on the opening fanfare.

This piece may be performed as part of a collection of four Whitman settings under the master title This Is Thy Hour. A majestic opening heralds the hour that unfolds to a rhythmic ostinato that acts as the underpinning for the text of This Is Thy Hour. A plaintive middle section contrasts with legato vocal lines for the text “thee fully forth emerging.” The work concludes revisiting the opening material and ends with triumphant homophonic chords before ending with a restatement of the softer middle section expressing the wonder of that which the poet loves best. 4th and 5th movement-Nicholas Kok’s newly-created vocal score of the 4th and 5th movements of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony is aimed particularly at vocal soloists and choral singers who wish to practice the two vocal movements in this work: it is available on sale as is the chorus score. To ensure a secure entry at the attacca beginning of the 4th movement the vocal score begins earlier in the 3rd movement. The rehearsal letters in the prevalently used orchestral materials have been taken into consideration so that the vocal score and chorus score are compatible with all the available music editions. In his 2nd Symphony premiered in 1895 after a seven-year gestation period Gustav Mahler combineddifferent work concepts which he had previously tried out in various independent compositions: the 1st movement with the original title Todtenfeier was conceived as a symphonic poem the 3rd movement is based on the original song for voice and piano St Anthony of Padua’s Sermon to the Fishes the 4th movement is the orchestral song Urlicht for alto with text like the 3rd movement from Des Knaben Wunderhorn and the 5th is a setting and elaboration of the Klopstock Ode Die Auferstehung for soprano and alto solo with mixed chorus. Mahler created a work in the vocal-symphonic tradition founded by Beethoven and despite its challenges in extent and scoring it remains one of his most popular compositions.

Warb E 22-At less than 20 years of age the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas Johann Sebastian Bach withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach’s church music comprises a number of vespers compositions some of them large-scale including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.
