In a moderate swing style John Berry perfectly captures the essence of the original in this version for younger bands. Includes brief solos for alto sax and trumpet.

Johann Schelle was Kantor of St. Thomas’s Leipzig from 1677 until his death in 1701. He received his training under the direction of Heinrich Schütz at the Dresden court. As Kantor Schelle expanded the repertoire the choir sang in church services with numerous sacred concertos motets and cantatas. The motet “Komm Jesu komm” was composed after the death of Jacob Thomasius professor at Leipzig University and Rector of St. Thomas’s School and was performed at his funeral ceremony in 1684. The predominantly amiable and song-like character of the intimate five-part setting reflects a baroque attitude to dying and death: dying is not regarded as a painful event but is longedfor expectantly as a release from the earthly and the door to eternal life in paradise. The poem is by Paul Thymich who also worked at St Thomas’s School. About half a century later Johann Sebastian Bach took the first and last verses of Thymich’s 11-verse poem and used them as the basis for his double-choir motet Komm Jesu komm.

Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem from the Dutch province of Friesland on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. ‘AwakeningVillage’ the first movement musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. ‘Bintje Monument’ was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) whodeveloped the well-known potato variety called ‘bintje’. The finale ‘Journey into the Unknown’ refers to the band’s memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

The image of a path not taken may evoke a sense of mystery and excitement at the unknown as well as the satisfaction of following our own individual path in life - a unique journey different from all others. This engaging work for band follows an arc of emotions ranging from the eager anticipation at the start of a journey; frustration and doubt as the path becomes more difficult and perilous; then elation and joy as the goal is reached and our dreams are realized.

Here is an emotion-filled arrangement for young players based on the folk tune Down to the River to Pray which is thought to have been composed by an African-American slave. There is an element of sadness in the music but also a glimmer of hope as the slaves dream of freedom and being reunited with family and friends. Dur: 2:45
