These settings were written to a commission from the Southern Cathedrals Festival and first performed in Salisbury Cathedral on 24 July 1976 by choirs of Salisbury Winchester and Chichester Cathedrals with the Phillip Jones BrassEnsemble conducted by Richard Seal. Pied Beauty The rhythmic elasticity and freedom of the poem matches the vividness of its images and the freshness of the poetic language: it is like light playing on water. In thissetting for choir and brass phrases for trumpets and then voices- ‘Glory to be God’- Alternate with more meditative moments- ‘who knows how?’. The contrast of the poem- ‘swift slow – sweet sour- a dazzle dim‘ quick changes fromsunshine to shadow- are mirrored in the music. Heaven Haven The stillness and serenity of this poem one of Hopkins’ earliest is in direct contrast to the other. ‘Out of the swing of the sea’ to a gently rockingfigure runs as a sort of undercurrent through the piece. At the end this figure combines with a motive in thirds (heard quietly on the trumpets at the opening) and expands slowly with the choir in eight parts before dying awayinto silence.

On a war memorial in the Dutch village of Wons is engraved a list of names to honour the fallen in World War II. This is the basis for the name of this piece. However this composition was written for everyone who has made Wons what it is today: a pretty place near to Lake IJssel with a comfortable way of life. The piece begins with a celebratory introduction in which the village is presented to the listener. There follows a delightful rhythmic and high-tempo theme that reflects the happiness innocence and carefree atmosphere before the war. Now we hear a moody fragmented theme depicting soldiers shooting. This is brought to a close with dissonant clusters of sound intoning the dreadful tragedy of the war. The ensuing quiet gives way to a calm middle section in a minor key that portrays both frustration and consolation. The fast tempo of the beginning returns this time in the form of a victory march. We hear freedom being celebrated. We hear the previous happy innocent and carefree themes too. There follows a festive martial theme a tribute to the village before the piece closes with sounds of celebration.

In the Variations on Old Psalm-Tunes for Organ Dyson fully explores the composer’s chosen sources: ‘Hard the glad sound’ from Ravencroft’s Psalter (1621) Orlando Gibbons’s Song 24 ‘O word Immortal’ and Song 5 ‘O Prince of Peace ’ and ‘I was glad’ from the Scottish Psalter (1615). These works are popular for service voluntaries.Twentieth century composer and educator George Dyson was a writer of ambitious and critically well-received works that due to their unfashionably accessible late Romantic style were allowed to languish and are now in the process of reassessment and renewed performance. However Dyson’s works for unison Voice and church music – in particular histwo settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis – have remained active in the Anglican repertoire.
