Japanese born Ryo Noda (b. 1948) has been hailed for his forward-looking avant-garde compositions and innovative playing techniques. Phoenix is no exception. Noda 's compositional achievements were significantly recognised in 1973 when he was awarded the SACEM Composition Prize. Phoenix was published soon after at the height of his career. Exploiting extended techniques on the Saxophone to their full potential Noda provides a detailed score with instruction. However a significant amount of interpretation with regards to tempo pauses and pitch bends is left to the performer. Phoenix isone of many significant works for solo Saxophone by the composer. Armenian composer and pianist Alexandre Aroutiounian (1920-2012) was awarded many prizes for his compositions throughout his career. His Aria and Scherzo for Trumpet and Piano is little-known yet it is a sublime addition to the modern repertoire. Aroutiounian 's works have been performed all over the world and he is particularly remembered for his Trumpet Concerto. Melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian music are prominent in Aroutiounian 's works further expressing his nationality by use of ashughner (folk minstrel) improvisations. Aria and Scherzo is made up of twomovements the Aria marked as adagio and the Scherzo as allegretto. Tonality is exploited throughout and contains unique uses of rhythm and ensemble. Aroutiounian 's Aria and Scherzo is an exciting piece for all advanced trumpeters.

Volume 1- Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms harmony melodies and his passion for ornithology his éclairs Sur L'Au-Delà for Orchestra is no exception to the composer's popular distinctive style.
