Modern American composer John Harbison wrote this sonata for pianist Robert Levin. A complex and intriguing Sonata composed for the celebrated performer and improvisor Robert Levin. Harbison's piece seeks to integrate some of his favoured choral techniques in an instrumental setting leading to a work that isstructurally dense and ever-changing. He combines the explicit with the implicit allowing the performer a great deal of freedom in nuance and phrasing - especially ideal for those accustomed to the situation of improvisation andrisk-friendly cliff-hanging performance. The work was completed in 2001 for commission by the publisher and was first performed by Levin in Boston 2003.

This Trumpet Concerto was commissioned by the Ford Foundation for Gerard Schwarz. It is a unique work; a delightful palette of succulent and colourful scoring for both soloist and orchestra. The piece has attractive melodies andharmonies uses several types of mutes for colour and is written in Schuller’s personal pan-stylistic musical language. The first movement opens with a mysterious exotic-sounding Introduction marked calmo leadingto a masculine yet jaunty Allegro comodo the trumpet being assigned characteristic semiquaver passage work. The movement also includes some beautiful lyrical and rhythmically simple passages. The second movement is a Scherzo-Trio-Scherzo at a vivace tempo. A short drawn out slow third movement concludes with a challenging full-page cadenza. Here the trumpet is required to play very rapid double-tonguing patterns on semiquaverpassages over a repeated quaver ostinato reminiscent of the first movement. The final movement is virtually a pyrotechnical fireworks display of musically interesting idiomatic thrilling passage work. This movement demonstratesonce again Schuller's extraordinary understanding and exploitation of the capabilities of the instruments. This edition contains a Piano reduction (by Robert Waddell) of the Concerto for rehearsal purposes only.

Composers note: Ivory and Ebony is about the black and white notes of the Piano which alternate 'thematically' but occasionally mix together. Since I am also a pianist this was a fun and challengingpiece to write for the upcoming piano virtuosos coming to the San Antonio competition. I hope they enjoy working on it and I very much look forward to their different interpretations.

Husa took light as his theme specifically: 'sunlight constantly surrounding us creating powerful images colours and shades in the sky and on the earth.'

The rest of the work describes Schubert's journey to the next world his awareness of the still-to-be-explored ideas of his musicallanguage and the completion of a fugue assigned to him shortly before his death on November 19 1928.
