Composer Note: In setting George Mackay Brown's acrostic lines for the birth of Lucy Randall (the first child borne in Rackwick Hoy for 32 years) I set myself the uncharacteristic problem of banishing all black' notes - that is the work used only the white' notes on the piano - a symbolic conceit' I had not tried before. The music has the gentle rocking rhythm suitable for its purpose and I enjoyed writing the tune so much I repeated all of the text in order to hear it twice. -Peter Maxwell Davies

He studied Piano Organ and composition at the Royal Academy of Music where he later became Professor of Piano - a post he held for nearly fifty years. He wrote over 120 songs most of which he performed himself while he also maintained a successful career as an accompanist. Money O! was first performed in 1928 and first published in 1929. It is the sixth and last in a song cycle entitled Songs Of The Countryside a collection of settings of poems by William Henry Davies . It has been arranged in G minor for solo Voice with Piano accompaniment.

Baritone Songs-The New Imperial Edition of Solo Songs has been designed as a chronological anthology of song from the Lutenists down to the present day. As other albums will be devoted exclusively to operatic and oratorio arias these are generally omitted from the present volumes.Manifestly the selection must be indicative rather than comprehensive or merely exclusive and is essentially practical not personal. Each song is briefly annotated and except where indicated appears in the original key or is set for the voice which it is normally associated.Apart from obvious restrictions the choice has been largely determined by certain positive needs. The edition is part of the ABRSM syllabus (grade 6) Philip Heseltine was born in London in 1894. In his short life he won public acclaim for the songs he wrote under the pseudonym Peter Warlock. Undoubtedly he was the composer of some of the finest of all English solo songs remarkable for their intensity memorable tunes and harmonic individuality. This fantastic album features 14 of Warlock's settings of English poems and delightfully convey not only the meaning and rhythm of the words but something of the atmosphere and charm of the period.
