Transcribed for Clarinet in B-flat and Cello- Bernstein often used the octatonic scale also very popular in jazz music as a basis for his compositions. Inspired by Chopin's mazurkas Bernstein originally composed these 'Variations' for recorder and cello in 1988-89.

This collection of 24 songs and arias draws on works that span the composer's lifetime including his early experimental and mature Americana periods. It would be difficult to overestimate the influence of Copland's music on American music of the 20th and 21st centuries. His songs and arias provide a concise tour of his stylistic journey and most of the songs are available in this remarkable volume. Includes: 9 songs (including 4 early songs); the complete 12 settings of Emily Dickinson's poems; 3 arias. The songs have been transposed down either a major or minor third; the original key is retained for the Emily Dickinson settings and the arias.

This short work for clarinet and piano began as an unaccompanied melody which Bernstein copied from the wall of his periodontist friend Dr. Ron Odrich and later dished-up as a jazz clarinet melody for his friend who also happened to be a jazz clarinettist. Odrich and his composer partner Larry Fallon then used the tune as a basis for a very stylish work for clarinet and piano.
