Born in 1941 the British composer Derek Bourgeois gained a doctorate at Cambridge before spending two years at the Royal College of Music where he studied composition with Herbert Howells and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. Bourgeois has composed seventeen symphonies twelve concertos and a considerable quantity of chamber vocal and instrumental music as well as twelve extended works for Brass Band and five symphonies for Symphonic Wind Orchestra. This piece for Trumpet and Piano was likely to have been an audition set piece for final examination at the Madrid Conservatoire. The Andante is designed to show off the performer's ability to play a slow melody and the Allegretto demands flamboyance. The whole piece has a light Spanish feel in the manner of Bizet's Carmen which dates from the same period.
