This composition is taken from the well-known Secular Cantata for Bass Voice Amore Traditore . In playing over this Cantata the writer was impressed by the sparkling vivacity and brilliance of the Cembalo obbligato in theBass Aria. This piece makes an excellent study for strengthening the individual fingers and can be practised in various rhythms. Lass dich nimmer von der liebe berücken.

For Chamber Ensemble. Commissioned by the Hebrides Ensemble and first performed on their Scottish tour in March 2010. In Seven Pierrot Miniatures I took the Commedia dell’arte character Pierrot as my primary sourceof inspiration. Other more tenuous links to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire also served as a starting point in forming the general shape of the work. The piece is cast in seven short movements whereas the Schoenberg comprises threesets of seven movements. Although there is no part for voice I have taken seven poems by Albert Giraud (none of them set in Pierrot Lunaire) as points of departure: 1. The Clouds 2. Decor 3. Absinthe 4.Suicide 5. The Church 6. Sunset 7. The Harp Each movement takes its impetus from the corresponding poem but in the piece as a whole I wanted to explore the extreme contrasts of the multi-faceted character ofPierrot in a musical setting. There is an almost mirror-like quality to the form of the piece and a sense of ending where it has begun: movements 1 3 5 and 7 are closely linked both in terms of their musical material and asense of melancholy dream-like quality and longing. Movements 2 and 6 are also strongly connected with allusions to the more mischievous violent side of Pierrot. Movement 4 serves as a sort-of pivotal point within the work juxtaposing a surreal shimmering calm with brutal outbursts. There is never any direct repetition yet there is a strong sense of material returning and mutating as the workunfolds. Richard Reed Parry S Quartet For Heart And Breath For Mixed Ensemble. Quartet For Heart And Breath Was Commissioned For Kronos Quartet By The 2009 Musicnow Festival. The Mixed Ensemble Arrangement Was Premiered By Ymusic. Instrumentation: Flute Clarinet In Bb Trumpet In Bb Violin Viola Violoncello And Double Bass (Optional). This Piece Is Based Around The Idea Of Using The Widely Varying Internal Rhythms Of The Performers’ Bodies As Performance Parameters. There Is No Actual Tempo OrMeter Built Into The Piece. The Breathing Rates Of The Players Are Used In Alternation With The Individual Performers’ Heart Rates To Determine The Pace At Which All Of The Musical Material Is Played. This Requires That The Performers Generally PlayQuietly And Delicately With Little Or No Vibrato So As To Be Able To Hear Their Heartbeats Adequately. This In Combination With Thenatural Variance Between The Different Heart Rates Results In A Kind Of Delicate Musical “Pointillism”: Starts AndStops Which Are Somewhat Staggered Parts Which Repeatedly Line Up And Fall Out Of Sync With Each Other Different Individuals’ Pulses Rising And Falling. The Piece Is Never Performed Exactly The Same Way Twice. The Performers Wear StethoscopesPositioned Over Their Hearts So That Each Can Follow His Or Her Own Heart Rate. Two Eighth Notes/Quavers Correspond To The Two Sounds Of A Normal Heartbeat And Performers Should Match As Closely As Possible The Staccato And Irregular Rhythm TheyHear. When Instructed To ‘Play To Breath’ The Natural Cycle Of One Inhalation And One Exhalation Or Vice Versa Will Determine The Length Of The Bar (Two Quarter Notes/Crotchets) Without Any Attempt To Make It Metronomic. For Wind Players ThisMeans That The Phrase Is Extended To Encompass The Whole Of Their Natural Breath Without Straining To Hold For As Long As Possible. When One Instrument Is Designated The Leader Their Breath Will Determine The Starts Of Phrases And The ProcessionFrom One Bar To The Next Cuing Other Parts If Necessary. - Richard Reed Parry Richard Reed Parry 's Quartet For Heart And Breath for mixed Ensemble. Dwellers By The Sea is the second movement of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak ’s cycle ‘Five Choruses For Male Voice’. The cycle of five choruses is setto Lithuanian folk texts translated by Frantisek Ladislav Celakovsky and is written for unaccompanied male choir (TTBB Voices). The title page of the autograph score bears the note: “Composed on the journey from Prague to Vienna 12th of December 1878”. The individual parts of the cycle present a vibrant palette of moods from the balladic Dwellers by the Sea to the final light-hearted ‘TheSparrow’s Feast’. The songs’ melodies echo the spirit of folk songs and the composer used simple but colourful harmonies and chose a strophic form.
