Overture to a New Age (“Ouverture d’une nouvelle ère”) débute avec une introduction solennelle suivie d’un canevas vif et rythmé. L’intervention de la clarinette solo marque le début d’un passage expressif et riche en contrastes. Un long crescendo précède le retour du motif initial. L’œuvre se termine sur une trame processionnelle dont la ligne mélodique annonce l’ouverture d’une ère nouvelle. Le thème du passage vif est alors réexposé et chemine en superposition à celui de la trame processionnelle. La coda grandiose illumine cette brillante ouverture.

Nombreux sont ceux qui connaissent cette superbe ballade interprétée par Céline Dion. Mais peu de gens savent que la mélodie originale provient du deuxième mouvement du Concerto pour piano n° 2 du compositeur et pianiste russe Sergueï Rachmaninov une œuvre magistrale dont le succès lui a assuré une renommée internationale. C’est avec finesse et élégance que Henk Hogestein a arrangé ce thème classique que tout le monde peut fredonner.

Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write this hymn by the “International Association for Human Rights” in Frankfurt. The commission specified that the instrumentation of this simple hymn should be so that it can be performed by a variety of combinations of players. The piece starts with an “intrada” for brass ensemble based on the first bars of the hymn but is “ad libitum” and can therefore be omitted. The coda can also be left out depending on the available instrumentation. The piece should be played “legato” to accentuate its hymn-like character.

Après avoir reçu une solide formation au Collège de Musique Guildhall à Londres il travaille plusieurs années durant comme compositeur à la BBC. Il collabore également avec Andrew Lloyd Webber l’un des plus brillants compositeurs de comédies musicales. Peter Skellern a essentiellement composé des chansons d’amour lyriques dont la plus célèbre est You’re a Lady . Wim Stalman a réalisé un arrangement particulièrement brillant et fidèle à la version originale.

A Sunrise Impression débute avec une impression de lever de soleil une rêverie au cours de laquelle est dévoilé le premier thème principal. La tension musicale augmente progressivement dans le Grandioso où l’on peut entendre le second thème exprimé avec puissance. Les développements qui succèdent au Grandioso n’altèrent en rien la présence appuyée des deux thèmes principaux qui le finale approchant gagnent en puissance grâce à l’introduction de nouveaux motifs rythmiques.

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the St. Peters Wind Symphony from Brisbane Australia. Ross Roy is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition Jacob de Haan sees the Ross Roy as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time) where one's personality is formed. So the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics.The rhythmic motion which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of Tempo di Marcia. Thismovement accompanied by repetitions of sound is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme symbolic of passing through the classes up to the final examinations.Then the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again now in a playful humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love friendship and understanding.We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds constituting the modulation to the final theme are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture for the school years can be considered the overture to the rest of one's life. The premiere of Ross Roy was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane on August 22 1997.

‘Spirit of Independence’ was commissioned by the Koninklijke Fanfare ‘Onafhankelijkheid’ (‘Independence’) from Wiekevorst (Belgium) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece depicts an enthusiastic amateur music club practicing and making music together in an attentive and companionable atmosphere. The conductor has the good habit of trying to improve the sound of the fanfare by means of practicing chorales and hymns. Jan Van der Roost has used these facts in the dynamic concert piece ‘Spirit of Independence’: a chorale-like middle section is surrounded by music bubbling full of energy.

Inspired by the music of legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone A Morricone Portrait is a skilfully arranged piece from Roland Kernen containing some of Morricone’s most beautiful melodies. Songs include: My Name Is Nobody Metello and Here’s to You. These familiar songs will be well received by any audience!

The German Christmas song Von Himmel hoch O Englein kommt is one of the oldest known German carols with the earliest versions also known as Susani going back to the 14th century. This exceptional arrangement by Jan de Haan works extremely well for brass band and will make an ideal work for any Christmas concert.

Harm Evers was inspired by the North Beach Parade which annually takes place along the west coast of California when he wrote this fast march in 6/8 time. This march will be an absolute success!

In Banja Luka Jan de Haan reflects aspects of the former Yugoslavia stricken by a civil war which brought terrible suffering to the people of this area. Banja Luka was written for the International Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.

Gilbert O’Sullivan rose to fame in the 1970s. Dressed in his cap and golfing trousers he sat at the piano and sang charming and cheerful songs. Roland Kernen has produced this arrangement of Matrimony - one of Gilbert O’Sullivan’s most popular hits.

Fantasy Tales décrit l’histoire de la ville de Horn aux Pays-Bas. L’œuvre développe un thème mélodique épique lyrique quasi filmique qui retrace l’évolution de cette ville située sur les rives de la Meuse. L’interprétation de ce thème par les cors a une portée symbolique. En effet le blason de la ville et les armoiries du comté de Horn sont constitués de trois cors de chasse rouges sur fond jaune. Un allegro joyeux écrit dans le style d’une pastorale dépeint la vie rurale autour de la ville et de son château. Le thème initial est réexposé mais la musique prend une tournure plus dramatique pour évoquer à travers des roulements de tambours lesdiverses périodes de guerre. L’espoir renaît néanmoins. Le thème premier est repris et se fait le signe de la reconstruction et de l’expansion. La ville de Horn est désormais tournée vers le futur.
