Shortly before his death Giovanni Pergolesi moved to the Franciscan monastery in Pozzuoli where he composed his last works. Among these is his Stabat mater - based on the medieval Latin poem. The piece reveals the infusion into church composition of the operatic style. Pergolesi's Stabat mater features a lively declamation of the text and great melodic appeal and expressiveness. Underlying everything is the contrapuntal background that was expected in music composed for the church at this time. This is is the full score of the original version which was written for Soprano and Alto Solos and small String Ensemble.

Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) began his musical life as a piano prodigy in Barcelona at the age of four and it is as a prolific composer of solo works for the pianoforte that we must celebrate him most. This Dover edition presents two of Albeniz' best known works in authoritative editions: the piano suite Iberia generally considered to be his masterpiece; and the album leaves Espana which contain the 'Tango' his most popular individual work. Iberia is a collection of twelve musical scenes of Spanish life principally Andalusian written between 1906 and 1909. Its brilliant and complex character is suffused with the rhythms and harmonies of Spanish popular music to which Albenizturned for inspiration in the last years of his life. Espana an earlier work first published in 1890 is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the 19th century-salon and like Iberia the harmony and style of Impressionism which Albeniz undeniably helped to establish.

The eight sonatas of Guilmant may well lay claim to classical rank. Originally conceived for the French organs of Cavaille-Col they are sufficiently broad in conception as to lose little if anything in their interpretation on English and American instruments. At the time of their composition (1874-1909) they brought to the Organ a new sense which had been too little cultivated by organists. This volume is edited by A. Eaglefield Hull and contains the First Sonata in D Minor Op.42 Second Sonata In D Major Op.50 Third Sonata In C Minor Op.56 Fourth Sonata In D Minor Op.61 and the Fifth Sonata In C Minor Op.80 .

The Requiem was Mozart's final composition. It was commissioned by the widow of the Countess von Walsegg who died in February 1791. After working on the Requiem through October and November however Mozart fell ill and died without completing it. Mozart's widow needing money asked Joseph Eybler to complete the work. Unfortunately he could not finish the work and it was handed over to Franz Xaver Sussmayr. However Sussmayr was a musician of limited capabilities and much of his contribution was in fact a copy of Eybler's work.
