These exquisite pieces are among many Fauré works which have long puzzled pianists with illogical-seeming metronome markings. The issue is addressed comprehensively in this edition presenting the performer with all the relevant narratives. Roy Howat also chronicles Fauré's struggles in trying to prevent his publisher from adding superfluous titles to the pieces.

In addition to definitive editions of the printed music (with German and English singing translations) the book includes phonetic transcriptions of the Norwegian and German lyrics and word-for- word translations into German and English. The publication also includes a CD which contains: spoken lyrics recorded by native speakers to help singers with pronunciation; study versions of the songs with both melody and simplified accompaniments played on the piano; complete piano accompaniment recordings (pianist Denette Whitter). The book also includes a foreword by Monica Jangaard curator of the Grieg Museum at Troldhaugen.

Second Eve by Ola Gjeilo was commissioned by dedicated to and later premiered by the Riverside City College Chamber Choir and conductor John Byun in Riverside California Oct. 2008. 'In some of my pieces the text is somewhat more the servant of the music than the other way around and Second Eve is one of those works. The music is mainly inspired by a breathtaking photography taken by one of my favourite photographers Jake Rajs featured in the book These United States (Rizzoli). It is a picture of Alaska's Mount McKinley the highest mountain peak in the US and I was looking at this photo throughout the writingprocess making sure that the energy and atmosphere of the music corresponded with the feeling I got from looking at the picture. The Sancta Maria text seemed to kind of fit into what I was looking for in this piece expressing something mystical and kind of regal which Mt. McKinley is in every possible way.' - Ola Gjeilo

One of the most important Czechoslovakian composers Bedrich Smetana was at the forefront of Bohemia's movement toward musical nationalism. This piece Aus Der Heimat (From the Native Country) harks back to and celebrates his nationalistic pride and patriotism. A superb chamber work for Violin and Piano.
