A Cradle Song by William Blake (1757–1827) depicts a mother’s love for her child. In his choral setting Fredrik Sixten creates a bright-sounding piece full of affection and atmospheric warmth. The piece was commissioned by Helsingborgs Vokalensemble.

Clara Schumann (née Wieck) was undoubtedly the most important female pianist of the 19th century. As a young child she toured Europe as a prodigy: her entire career as a celebrated piano virtuoso spanned more than 60 years. Equally important but less well known is the composer Clara Schumann who published her Opus 1 at the age of eleven. Despite the domestic duties expected of a woman at that time she created numerous outstanding piano works and songs that are at least the equal of those of her male contemporaries. However society at that time did not allow women to be regarded as fully-fledged composers or for their works to be appreciated adequately. To help give thisimportant composer the recognition she deserves Edition Peters in collaboration with the Schumann-Haus Leipzig is now on the occasion of her 200th birthday publishing this Anniversary Songbook. The 14 songs representing the pinnacle of Clara’s art were composed mainly in the period after her marriage in Leipzig to Robert Schumann – who was her greatest champion. A suite of passionate and atmospheric songs for choir and orchestra with poetry by the archaic female Greek poet Sappho in a new translation by Alasdair Middleton. Sappho lived over 2 500 years ago. Of the thousands of lines of lyric poetry she is believed to have written only a few hundred survive and with the exception of one complete poem all that remain are fragments. Jonathan Dove uses six fragments of text in the work. Four of the fragments are songs of love in different forms framed by an evocation of the goddess of love and a vision of the moon. Rhythmic vibrancy memorable melodies and vivid orchestral colours all combine in a seductive work that dazzles andinspires. Broish McRoish is a rhythmic piece based on traditional Gaelic sprechgesang - the so-called ‘Puirt a beul’ (mouth music). The text is meaningless comparable to scat and primarily serves to drive the piece forward rhythmically.The harmony slowly builds up from one to four voices and gives the singing a charming unusual sound.
