Alapa-Tarana Op.41 for Mezzo-Soprano and Percussion was composed by Poul Rovsing Olsen in 1959. Programme note: I was encouraged by the singer Jolanda Rodio to write a piece for mezzo-soprano and percussion. In my mind the idea immediately awoke associations of Indian or Arab music in which the combination of drums together with either an instrument or voice is very common. In a solo performance (as opposed to choral and ensemble performances) the piece is called a raga or a macam. A raga or macam is a scale and at the same time a number of melodic formulas. Further more it is a spiritual concept a specific raga or macam expressing a specific emotion. My piece isnot based on any traditional Indian raga or Arab macam. The raga in my piece is entirely my own invention. The title is derived from Indian music an Alapa being the first unaccompanied part of a raga. Traditionally in the Alapa the characteristics of the raga are first presented improvisationally without strict metre followed by a section in which the drums set in. The latter can have various forms. I have chosen a variation form called Tarana. The Old Chevalier (2005) - A Gothic Tale for Tenor Trombone and Ensemble . Piano reduction/Solo Trombone part: WH30940 Version for Bass Trombone: WH30942 Programme note The Old Chevalier for Trombone and Ensemble is the second of a series of seven compositions named after Karen Blixen 's collection of short stories Seven Gothic Tales. My musical gothic tales are written for very different ensembles - THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE is a saxophone quartet - but they all share musical material in a criss-cross of contextual references reminiscent of Blixen's narrativecomplexity: Themes and motivs from one piece appears in others in new and surprising shapes and combinations. Karen Blixens The Old Chevalier begins with an old man talking to a youth about obl igation and passion. The old man tells a story about a beautiful woman who wanted tomake her husband jealous and cheated on him with a young man who admired him. After discovering the truth the young man meets a prostitute on her very first job. The girl is an innocent trading favors for shelter. The young man falls in love but she remains oblivious to his passion. She leaves after their encounter without emotional involvement. Many years later the young man - the old man telling the tale - recognizes the girl in a beautifulskull he's holding in his hand. The Old Chevalier isn't 'about' anything. The music is inspired by the artistic content of Blixen's short story - it's emotionalism dramatic construction atmosphere period and setting - but unfolds in time and musical space in ways that are completely independent of the story's narrative progression... except one might say that the trombone makes love to the piano and at the very end - just like the old man in the story is left contemplating its remains. The piece is written for the trombonist Jens Vind.

The Oarsman-The Piano music of Jean Sibelius ranks among the greatest of Finnish music and his 1924 set Five Charactereistic mpressions demonstrates his importance. The third piece of this set The Oarsman is the pick of the bunch having an uplifting Spanish theme and flavour. It is an impressionist piece that captures the flair and the imagery of reality with fabulous tonality and colour.

Commissioned by John Storgårds Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Nordic House in the Faroe Islands. Dedicated to the composers daughter Malan. Preface / Programme note: From the Edda verse 31 Three roots there are that three ways run Neath the ash-tree Yggdrasil Neath the first lives Hel neath the second the frost-giants Neath the last are the lands of men. The idea behind the Symphony is the story of Yggdrasil The Tree of Life from the Old Norse mythology. The Ash-tree reaches all the way into the sky and has three roots each growing into three different places. One root grows into the Land of Hel (Hel is the goddess of Hell) called Helheim another into the Land of Frost- Giants called Jotunheim and one root grows into the Land of men called Asgard . And the Ash-tree reaches into the sky. In the crown of the tree lives a squirrel which moves fast around the tree and spreads gossip both between the three roots and between three roots and the crown of the tree. The Edda is a large collection of Old Norse poems collected in the 12th Century by the Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson.
