Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen: Green (SATB) For four voices Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen's Green for 4 Voices (SATB). Programme note: New Ground - No Ground - Green In 1986 I wrote Ground for the Kronos Quartet. I used the principle of the baroque ground and created a series of chords - going up and going down symmetrically. The material formed the basis for the quartet. In my next collaboration with Kronos I wrote the darker Last Ground - at the time supposed to be my last composition of the kind. After some years this seemed a bit pathetic and I decided to write a new - lighter ground - New Ground . To disappoint mylisteners as much as possible I based this piece on a very old and very well-known ground: Pachelbel's Canon. The piece is tonal and that suggested another -atonal - composition - No Ground (based on another string quartet - no. 7 Parted from 1984 first performed by Kronos). I am very fond of the elaborated constructivism of the medieval or early renaissance music so in my view the two new quartets needed to be connected and combined. The two quartets can be performed in combination with the four-part vocal piece Green. The text is from medieval England. The pieces are written for the Kronos Quartet and Theatre of Voices.

Composer's Program Note Repertoire operas occationally have orchestral suites: Bits and pieces of overture interlude etc. tied up in a bouquet of 'schonste Tränen'. Contemporary opera usually wither after the first season so the focus is on getting people to come and have a sniff before it's too late. Consequently it seemed obvious to me to start making orchestral excerpts from my operas that are meant to be played before the premiere (and after please); I call them 'opera trailers' when they're substantial enough to be considered independent works and 'opera demos' when they're relatively short and moreappetizer-ish. SNOW WHITE'S MIRROR is a full scale two act dramatic opera written for the Danish National Opera. The opera is a modern re-telling for grown-ups of the brothers Grimm's fairy tale: Snow White is a self-centered teenage narcissist and the villain of the opera; she ends up loosing everyone but herself either because she kills them or because they decide they can't stand being around her anymore. But apparently she's o.k. with that... The music is intended for a large audience: it's basically pop music done with all the craftmanship of a classical composer who's equally at home with large scale symphonic form avantgarde technique opera singing - and modern pop. The Trailer is in three movements. It contains three sections of the opera; the prelude an interlude close to the beginning of the second act and the final scene but one. It's a gloomy sort of trailer starting out in grand title sequence style moving on to a decidedly odd piece where Snow White find her way to the dwarfs (who're creepy junkies doing pornography to get money to buy dope) and ending in kind of an eerie rejection mood: Everyone still alive walks out on Snow White singing 'skin as white as snow hands red with blood soul as black as ivory'. After many years of teaching Accordion Jeanette and Lars Dyremose realised that there was a real need to supplement the existing Accordion literature with works focusing pedagogically on the development of specific skills necessary to master the technical demands of the instrument. Harp Solo-Consolation - Like A Roselike Flower (Consolazione - Flos Ut Rosa) for Harp solo by Per Nørgård (2002). Written for and dedicated to Tine Rehling. Programme note by the composer: The concept of Mary has a depth that transcends all religious persuasions. All over the earth symbols of the gentle and maternal are known. But the word 'Maria' is also associated - in sound - with the Latin word for the sea mare and she thus become the Star of the Sea Maris Stella. In my 3rd Symphony the Maria motif is used in a hymn section in the second and last part of the work. The choral song Flos ut rosa floruit was composed directly in the context of the symphony and themelody had a 'stamina' that carried it over into many later vocal and choral compositions for instance the Concerto for Harp No. 2 - through thorns (2003) and the present Consolazione for harp solo both works dedicated to Tine Rehling. Tributes - Album For Strings (1994-95) by Per Norgard . Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk I: FOUR OBSERVATIONS - FROM AN INFINTE RAPPORT - hommage a Bartok (1995) II: OUT OF THIS WORLD - hommage a Lutoslawski (1994) III: VOYAGE INTO THE BROKEN SCREEN - hommage a Sibelius (1995). Programme note TRIBUTES - album for strings (1994-95) includes three hommages which might also be performed separately. The shared point of departure was the hommage to three major composers of the 20th century - Bartok Lutoslawski and Sibelius. In FOUR OBSERVATIONS the hommage is to Bartok (on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death 1995). Hungarian Radio asked me to write a piece in his honor but apart from the very last unison string figure which is - I think - very Bartokian the work in no way intends to evoke even less to imitate the musical style of the great Hungarian master. This would be an act of impudence against a composer who was such an exceptionally integrated personality and who has himself shown (in 'Mikrokosmos') the worthy way to pay a personal tribute to highly respected colleagues: In 'Hommage a J.S.B.' and 'Hommage à R. Sch.' Bela Bartok composes in his own manner but lets the music reflect some qualities of the said composers as perceived in Bartok's mind. In a similar way my 'Observations from an infinite Rapport' reflects as well the timeless proportions of the 'golden section' - which seem to have inspired Bartok so much - in his great respect for perceptive structural patterns. 'OUT OF THIS WORLD' was composed at the request of a group of Lutoslawski's friends as a symbol of parting to a great composer and a noble man. The title quotes a poem by Yunus Emre the Turkish 14th century poet. The opening line of the poem 'Biz dunyadan' reads as follows in English translation: 'We are on the way out of this world we
