Das Veilchen-The elegant playful endlessly creative pen of Mozart wrote this short song on 8 June 1785 in Vienna. The three-verse poem by Goethe had already been set to music by at least four composers before Mozart was inspired to write. While the poem has three equal stanzas the song has three distinct moods relating to the words. They tell the sad tale of a violet – symbolizing a young man – who loves a young shepherdess. The shepherdess carelessly tramplesthe violet who manages to die happily for love. Mozart himself added a final sympathetic line of text. The range is not demanding and there are useful notes in this edition on ornamentation making this a charming addition toa younger singer’s repertoire as well as to an experienced singer’s collection.

The Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) has been highly regarded in Britain from the time of his first visit in 1829. His anthem Hear My Prayer has been a bastion of the Anglican choralrepertoire since its composition in 1844. O For The Wings Of A Dove is the most famous passage from Hear My Prayer and has rightly gained fame in its own right as a piece for solo Voice. Thegraceful melodies and use of the full range make it a challenging but highly rewarding piece for any Soprano or Treble. It is presented here with an accompaniment suitable for the Piano.

Thanks be to God is traditional in style and lends itself well to this four-part arrangement with stately chordal accompaniment. Few people know that ‘Stanley Dickson’ did not write this internationally renowned song of thanks. There was no ‘Stanley Dickson.’ It was a pseudonym one of several used by Australian composer May Brahe to allow publishers to print more of her prodigious output. The only Australian woman composer of international renown inthe first part of the 20th century May Brahe also penned Bless This House and nearly 500 others.
