Andrew Clements of the Guardian newspaper says 'Maw is a composer who has been at pains to remake connections with the late-romantic tradition and Odyssey is a convincing reassertion of its continuing relevance a demonstration that long-range harmonic thinking and thematic development can be still potent resources for the right composer. . .the five-part structure of the work holds together more eloquently than one could possibly imagine; at times the musical language is close to early Berg at others it recalls the English tradition of the same period. It is a tapestry of long-limbed melodies pregnant with thematic possiblities and often punctuated with timpani motifs magical horn solos suspended in space massive climaxes crowned by flaring trumpets lush minutely detailed string writing and intricate webs of woodwind tracery'

An Opera in Three Acts-Adès’s third opera The Exterminating Angel premiered at the Salzburg Festival in July 2016. Based on Luis Buñuel’s surrealist classic El ángel exterminador the opera sees a collection of society’s grandees inexplicably trapped in a room. The libretto adapted from the original Buñuel-Alcoriza screenplay by the composer together with the director Tom Cairns brilliantly captures their descent into anarchy. Featuring a jaw-dropping 15 principals (who remain on stage for the majority of the piece) The Exterminating Angel is a true ensemble opera and the skill with which Adès delineates the many intricacies and undercurrents present over its densely-packed span (just under twohours plus interval) is breathtaking. Like the shipwrecked characters of The Tempest the cast of this new opera are held in a state of entrapment and dramatic stasis. Like the glittering high-society world of Powder Her Face the dinner party guests are denizens of a nightmarish world of aristocratic pretension. To some the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat Solomon Browne would need no introduction and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981 has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory. Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band conducted by Ian Porthouse at St. Michael's Church Newquay on 30th December 2008. Penlee has been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. Not only is it the first time a brass work has been featured in the Hall of Fame but it was also the highest new entry. The work has subsequently been recorded by the Leyland Band conducted by Jason Katsikaris on the CD entitled Penlee . Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section Duration: 13 minutes

For Soprano and Orchestra. Andrew Clements says 'None of the four songs lasts more than a few minutes yet they pack in an astonishing range of emotional and vocal nuance. . .with wonderfully lucid colours drawn from a vast ensemble; each song seems to define its sound world within a couple of bars compressed into a phrase or a couple of chords. They are beautifully achieved little songs brought off with the lightest of touches'. Financial Times 10 March 1992
