The origin of the melody My Country ’Tis of Thee is not known but assumed to generate from Europe. The melody is also used for the national anthem of the United Kingdom God Save the Queen. The text for My Country ’Tis of Thee was written by Samuel Francis Smith and was given its first public performance on July 4th 1831 at an Independence Day celebration in Boston. It was published a year later under the title America. This arrangement was performed at the Capitol for the Inauguration of Donald Trump 45th President of the United States on 20th January 2017. Required to be an unaccompanied arrangement it follows a theme and variations structure where the melody is passedthroughout the choir. A deeply moving lament that perfectly captures the feelings of the African-American slaves. Their existence was so dire that “going home” in death was for many a welcome relief. This arrangement has a slow jazz feel but is reverent and dignified. The texture is wonderfully varied through the use of homophony ostinati and imitation. While not overtly religious Campion’s text inspires us in its spirituality hope and faith to believe in a power greater than ourselves. Five Mystical Songs

Commissioned by Dr. Geoffrey Boers and the University of Washington Chamber Singers to be short responses to movements of an eclectic Mass these four Responsorials can be performed together or separately. The texts are extracted and adapted from William Wordsworth’s Illustrious metaphysical poem On the Power of Sound which delves deeply into the mysteries of the natural (and supernatural) world and its complex relationship with the physics of voice and sound. An expansive feeling of both joy and mystery pervades these short vignettes. Duration: 6:00 1. As deep to deep shouting through one valley calls (1:30) 2. Commisioned by the National Youth Orchestra of Canada Lead Us Home speaks to the power music holds: its ability to comfort to transport and heal. In moments of conflict strife and grief we turn to music to lead us home and make us whole. The music is homophonic and set in a hymn-like style. At the end of each concert in its 2018 tour the orchestra would stand and sing this piece a cappella. Duration: 3:00

The scoring is for mixed chorus and jazz trio but it certainly could be performed with just a piano (probably best with three hands). The storytelling aspect of the text allows for some intriguing performance opportunities. There are a very few places where two parts are written but they are easy. Useful and charming for any treble group at Christmas time.
