The origin of the melody My Country ’Tis of Thee is not known but assumed to generate from Europe. The melody is also used for the national anthem of the United Kingdom God Save the Queen. The text for My Country ’Tis of Thee was written by Samuel Francis Smith and was given its first public performance on July 4th 1831 at an Independence Day celebration in Boston. It was published a year later under the title America. This arrangement was performed at the Capitol for the Inauguration of Donald Trump 45th President of the United States on 20th January 2017. Required to be an unaccompanied arrangement it follows a theme and variations structure where the melody is passedthroughout the choir. Due to the nature of the event this arrangement is deliberately “ceremonial” in feel. Duration: 2:15 The origin of the melody My Country ’Tis of Thee is not known but assumed to generate from Europe. We are constantly bombarded with language and images that challenge us to consider our world from many points of view. This is important but perhaps even more important is what do we do with all these viewpoints. How shall we live? We all make choices as to how we respond to our world. This piece with a strong gospel music feel offers a positive and encouraging response to the decisions of life and how we choose to live it. For optional treble solo and two-part treble chorus and piano. A deeply moving lament that perfectly captures the feelings of the African-American slaves. Their existence was so dire that “going home” in death was for many a welcome relief. This arrangement has a slow jazz feel but is reverent and dignified. The texture is wonderfully varied through the use of homophony ostinati and imitation. A new musical setting of an exquisite text by Thomas Campion (1567-1620). While not overtly religious Campion’s text inspires us in its spirituality hope and faith to believe in a power greater than ourselves. The musical setting attempts to capture the smooth melodic flow of Renaissance song along with its imitative qualities. Commissioned by Dr. Geoffrey Boers and the University of Washington Chamber Singers to be short responses to movements of an eclectic Mass these four Responsorials can be performed together or separately. The texts are extracted and adapted from William Wordsworth’s Illustrious metaphysical poem On the Power of Sound which delves deeply into the mysteries of the natural (and supernatural) world and its complex relationship with the physics of voice and sound. An expansive feeling of both joy and mystery pervades these short vignettes. Duration: 6:00 1. As deep to deep shouting through one valley calls (1:30) 2. Calling to mind compositions written for traditional men’s singing societies in Germany the harmonies and lyric character of this arrangement are as one might hear in a Christkindlmarkt in Northern Europe. This arrangement is especially useful when programming a Christmas in Germany-themed concert and/or when it is best for a men’s ensemble to engage with only limited lines of German poetry. Commisioned by the National Youth Orchestra of Canada Lead Us Home speaks to the power music holds: its ability to comfort to transport and heal. In moments of conflict strife and grief we turn to music to lead us home and make us whole. The music is homophonic and set in a hymn-like style. At the end of each concert in its 2018 tour the orchestra would stand and sing this piece a cappella. Duration: 3:00

This strong tune and text speaks to the respect with which any nation treats the men and women who serve in their military. Beginning softly the effect is like a parade that starts in the distance and gradually progresses ever closer to the listener. Following a brief introduction the first verse is in unison. Each successive verse expands not only the part writing but the sound and effect. The strength of the harmonic structure the depth of the textual importance and a relentless rhythmic drive make this piece a strong addition to any program. This setting of the Mother Goose nursery rhyme is dangerously close to a groovy choral vamp! The scoring is for mixed chorus and jazz trio but it certainly could be performed with just a piano (probably best with three hands). The storytelling aspect of the text allows for some intriguing performance opportunities. The moments of unison singing call and response singing and a relentless rhythmic drive make this a great option for a concert closer. -Ken Berg Duration: 3:00This setting of the Mother Goose nursery rhyme is dangerously close to a groovy choral vamp! A syncopated setting with a sweet sprightly piano accompaniment this piece is a fine teaching tool for unison singing vowel formation and handling skips and leaps. There are a very few places where two parts are written but they are easy. Useful and charming for any treble group at Christmas time.
