The Samba is a Latin American dance which is mostly associated with parties as a result of the fast tempo in which it is usually played. ‘Sumba Samba’ forms an exception to this rule. In order to get this samba to swing it is important to stick to the tempo prescribed. ‘Sumba Samba’ starts with a motif which will play an important role throughout the piece. This motif can be heard in the first notes of the ‘refrain’ and as said before has been used in the introduction as well as in the transition after the middle part (letter G). Furthermore it plays an important role in the middle part itself (letter E) in which the samba has momentarily disappeared and acompletely different atmosphere has been created. At letter H we pick up where we left off with the samba and swing to the end of this composition.

Ceremonial Entry is a non-programmatic introductory work in which the timpani’s set a slow movement supported by a long pedal in the basses. Interrupted by signal like motifs the dynamics gradually increase resulting in a heroic trumpet-call. The motion becomes rounder and is followed by a section which brings to mind the rhythmical cadence of galley slaves rowing. As the opening slow movement returns a climax follows similar to the “Pini di Roma” from the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. Ceremonial Entry was composed to celebrate the 25th Frysk Fanfare Festival.

David Well composed 'Frida's Whiskers' in commemoration of his own cat who met an untimely end. Frida (whose real name was 'Godefrida van Coopersburg thoe Nieuwenhuys') was a lively creature who led a playful and uncomplicated life. She used to sleep in her basket for hours but when she woke up she upset the entire house and its furnishing. Curtains were inspected from top to bottom and flower pots fell from window-sills just like that! Outside in the open air she was in her element. She used to frolic bouncing into the air. After such playful moods she would return to her basket tired but satisfied where being the cleanly cat that shewas she subjected her entire body whiskers included to a thorough wash.

There are people who are capable of planning well. They live their lives in a well-structured manner and know exactly what they have to do. On the other hand there are also people who are the exact opposite: they want to do too many things at once and are often somewhat absent-minded which occasionally results in frantic situations. The outcome of one such situation is ‘They are coming’. John Emerson Blackstone had been working on a new composition for some time when he received a telephone call from his editor who told him that the deadline was approaching rapidly even worse that it would expire at the end of that same day and that he would drop by in person to fetch thecomposition! Blackstone set to work in a frenzy and completed the last details. When his editor arrived the piece was finished ..... and got its definitive title: ‘They are coming’.

‘Panem et Circenses’ Bread and Games were essential for keeping the citizens of ancient Rome in check. While the bread was meant for the poorest among the Romans the Games were Popular Pastime Number One for everybody. There were different kinds of games such as chariot races (especially popular with female spectators) or wild-beast fights where lions tigers bulls or bears were set on one another or even on human beings. Most popular however were the Gladiator fights. In ‘Bread and Games’ William Vean depicts one of the many fights in the antique Colosseum. 1. Entrance of the Gladiators: By powerful bugle-calls the attention of the peoplewas asked for after which the Gladiators entered the Arena at the sound of heroic marching-music. 2.Swordfight: We can hear that the fights were not mere child’s play in this part.On the contrary they were a matter of life and death and were fought accordingly. 3.Mercy of the Emperor: Sometimes a wounded gladiator could be fortunate depending on the mercy of the audience. Waving one’s handkerchief meant mercy a turned-down thumb meant no pardon. The Emperor had the right to take the final decision but he usually complied with the wish of the majority of the public. 4.Lap of Honour: Gladiators were mainly selected among slaves convicted criminals or prisoners of war. Consequently winning was very important as it would mean fame honour and sometimes even wealth. A lap of honour therefore was the winner’s due reward.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of There is a land of pure delight and is known as the Father of English Hymnody. Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World When I survey the wondrous cross I sing the Mighty Power of God) There is a Land of Pure Delight is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). Here is used a traditional English melody ('Mendip'). There is a land of pure delight Wheresaints immortal Reign. Infinite day excludes the night And pleasures banish pain ..

Whereas ‘Auld Lang Syne’ may be considered the best-known Scottish song ever yet at the same time it is an obscure one for there are but few people who know the complete text by heart. After the familiar ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot .....‘ many people take their refuge to lyrics like ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah lah lah ........... for auld lang syne’. Even in Scotland only a handful of persons know the entire text and are able to give a correct rendering of it. The current lyrics have been attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Burns however he did not write the whole poem : after he had heard an old man sing the centuries-old Scotchballad he wrote it down and added a number of stanzas (1788). Historical research teaches us that the ballad served many purposes both political and religious. Nowadays ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung as a Christmas Carol and it is also sung on New Year’s Eve at the turning of the year. Apart from that though the song is also sung on many other occasions – sometimes with different lyrics which usually have Love Friendship and/or Parting as their themes as these go well with the fascinating melody. In this arrangement a low-sounding solo instrument is central. The harmonization in the accompaniment fits in perfectly with the sentiments this song will evoke. Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquintance be forgot. And days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne my dear For auld lang syne We’ll take a cup of kindness yet For auld lang syne.

NIGHT - Carl Hauptmann Twilight floats above the valley's night mists are hanging there's a whispering brook. Now the covering veil is lifting quite: come and look! See the magic land beforeour gaze: tall as dreams the silver mountains stand crossed by silent silver paths shining from a secret land. Noble pure the dreaming country sleeps. By the path the shadow black and hogh of a beech. a wisp of a white smoke creeps to the dark'ning sky. Where the valley is the darkest hued countless little lights shine silently. O my soul! Drink of solitude!
