Vroeger hebben in de omgeving van Augustinusga (deze streek heet in het Fries ¬?de Wâlden’) kloosters gestaan. Het waren veilige plekken in een ruige omgeving. In de boeken van Theun de Vries een bekende Friese schrijver komt naar voren dat de paden tussen de verschillende dorpen en gehuchten erg onveilig waren. Angst overheerste. Het was een ruw volk. bovendien heerste er veel armoede. Sfeer van angst en onrecht worden in deze compositie voelbaar vertolkt. De Slag om de brug bij Blauferlaet (2e wereldoorlog) speelt een belangrijke rol in Fjoer en Fidúsje. - Fjoer (vuur) geeft de gedrevenheid doorzettingsvermogen en sterke betrokkenheidvan de mensen aan om de armoede en het onrecht te bestrijden. - Fidúsje (vertrouwen) heeft de bevolking in ¬?de Wâlden¬? altijd gehad in zichzelf en velen ook in God. Het koraal tegen het einde in deze compositie geeft dit prachtig weer. Carl Wittrock schreef deze compositie ter gelegenheid van het 100-jarig bestaan van fanfare orkest ¬?De Bazuin¬? uit Augustinusga.

‘Feroaring fan Lucht’ is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige roman van de Friese schrijver Rink van der Velde (1932-2001). De vele werken van Van der Velde zijn meestal gebaseerd op ervaringen die hij opdeed tijdens zijn werk als journalist of uit dehistorie van zijn eigen leefomgeving (Z.O. Friesland). De tweede wereldoorlog is een vaak terugkerend thema. De hoofdfiguren zijn niet zelden eenlingen. Ze kenmerken zich door het feit dat ze zich niet het meeste aantrekken van de geldenderegels die in de ‘normale’ maatschappij in acht worden genomen. De hoofdfiguur uit Feroaring fan Lucht ‘Durk Luchtigheid’ (in de volksmond Durk Snoad) voldoet volledig aan deze omschrijving. Jan Bosveld heeft een muzikalevertelling gecomponeerd waarin hij gebruik maakt van een leid-motief (twee stijgende kwart sprongen Bes-Es-C-F). Dit leid-motief heeft de toepasselijke naam ‘Durk-motief’ gekregen en is in vele hoedanigheden zowel melodisch als in deaccordiek (kwartstapeling) te beluisteren. Het werk begint met het ‘Durk-motief’. Levenslustig en onbekommerd stapt Durk door het leven genietend van de dingen die het leven voor hem in petto heeft. Plotseling is het tijd voor hetapp?l (maat 24) Durk blaast op een oude gedeukte bugel een soort reveille. Hij ziet zeven kinderen verschijnen maar bedenkt dat het er toch meer zouden moeten zijn. Na een wat nadrukkelijker geblazen reveille telt hij tien telgen. Dit stelt hemtevreden. Na het ochtendritueel trekt hij de natuur in (maat 28). Hij geniet van de wind de zon en de rust en laat de dingen op zich afkomen zoals ze zich aandienen. Dat Durk uit de natuur ook geldelijk gewin haalt hoort men in de nachtelijkestrooptocht (maat 73). Als hij langs zijn opgezette vallen gaat blijft hij op zijn hoede voor de veldwachter. Deze ligt echter als een wolf op de loer en ontdekt Durk. Hij blaast op zijn fluit (maat 111) en er ontstaat een achtervolging (maat 116).De sterke arm is langer dan Durk denkt en hij wordt uiteindelijk in de kraag gevat. Na tussenkomst van een maatschappelijk werkster wordt Durk tewerkgesteld bij Philips en verhuist hij naar een nieuwbouwwoning in Drachten (maat 149). Hijvoelt zich in zijn nieuwe huis en op het werk niet op zijn gemak en verlangt terug naar zijn oude bestaan (maat 157). Tegen alle bureaucratie in besluit hij terug te gaan naar zijn oude woning op de Zandlaan. Zelfs de burgemeester komt eraan tepas om deze eigenzinnige Fries om te praten maar helaas het heeft geen zin. Als hij krijgt te horen dat hij mag blijven wonen waar hij heel zijn leven al heeft doorgebracht is hij een gelukkig man (maat 230). Eind goed al goed.

The Baron of Dedem once ruled over a large plot of peat in the Netherlands. 1809 saw the beginning of the construction of a canal to transport this fuel so important in those days. The canal was named after the Baron as was the nearby village. This work describes the establishment of the canal and the village but also life in the region nowadays thereby setting a slice of Dutch life to music.

Noel is based on the famous English Carol The First Noel. The age of this song is not clear.Some scientists argue that this song is from early thirteenth century others say that it's from the sixteenth century. The first publication was in 'Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern' compiled by William B. Sandys. (London 1833). The exact origin is unknown. By Norman influences on the text with the result that the spelling of the song is not certified (Noel Nowell) an individual will claim that France is the home of this song but in general is assumed that the First Noel 'has been sung somewhere in England for the first time.

The Yiddish word ‘Klezmer’ has been derived from the Old Hebrew words ‘Kley’ (tool instrument) and ‘Zemer’ (song singing making music). Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. ‘Klezmer Discovery’ is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe. The introduction consists of anumber of motives from different traditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L’cha Dodi) followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel’s Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently ‘Der Terk in Amerika’ a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of ‘Klezmer Discovery’ (Lebedyk un Freylekh Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele).

The young have the future. This is the statement made at the beginning of ‘Like a Child’ by Andreas Ludwig Schulte. The opening radiates strength and ambition but one is also made to wonder which direction will be chosen which choices will have to be made. After the introduction the first steps on the path of life are taken still somewhat unsteadily (the 3/4th time used illustrates this uncertainty). However the child has now set off and will meet the future with an open mind unafraid even though experience will teach it how easily it can be hurt. Fortunately it is sometimes allowed to be vulnerable and it discovers there will always be someone to offer shelter support and love. (Adagio) The last part breathes a far greater independence. Youth is able to face the future it can even take on the whole world!

Just wake up the public? With this snack it remains difficult to sit still! Before you know it everyone folds to the joyful sounds of the circus band.

The tradition of the Christmas tree in Western Europe dates back to a time long before any Christianization had taken place. During the severely cold winter nights so it was believed evil spirits tried to 'kill' nature. Needle-leaved trees were the only ones which kept their green colour throughout the year and therefore became symbols of immortality. These 'living' trees said to be the work of benign spirits were brought into people's houses to ward off evil life-threatening powers. In the 14th century people first started to decorate Christmas trees. It was a pagan custom originated by the inhabitants of Alsace. This custom was taken over by the Church inthe course of the 15th and 16th century. At first the decoration consisted mainly of edibles such as apples and wafers but later small presents were added. Legend has it that the reformer Martin Luther was the first person to decorate a Christmas tree with candles. The flickering candle flames were meant to create the image of a starry sky in which Christ's apparition could be recognized. The German organ-player Ernst Anschütz from Leipzig was the first person to notate the song 'O Tannenbaum' the melody being a well-known folk song. Next to 'Stille Nacht' 'O Tannenbaum' is the most famous German Christmas song now known throughout the world. In the United States of America the melody of 'O Tannenbaum' has even been used in four States (among which the State of Maryland) for their State song. In David Well's arrangement the song is first heard as many of us know it. After this introduction however it is transformed into a solid rock version and the beat has been changed. In the second part the familiar three-four time is back but here the rhythm is different from the original. After the richly ornamented rock beat the basic theme can be heard once again and the composition is concluded in a festive manner.

The Innocent Condemned tells of the so-called buck riders (bokkerijders) who in the middle of the 18th Century caused mayhem in the area around Limburg. Calmer passages in the music depict the fear of the locals while a vivo furioso describes a night raid and powerful drum sounds together with emotional musical lines illustrate the execution of an innocent. A gripping piece of history caught in music!

Tijdens zijn loopbaan als concertorganist speelde Rob Goorhuis talloze malen de Sonata da Chiesa van Hendrik Andriessen een werk dat typisch is voor de stijl en het coloriet van deze Nederlandse organist-componist. De betekenis van Andriessen voor de Nederlandse kerkmuziek is zeer groot geweest. Vele koor- en orgelwerken ontstonden in de bloeitijd van het rijke Roomse leven. Als eerbetoon aan deze kunstenaar die destijds als organist van de kathedraal van Utrecht talrijke luisteraars trok met zijn kleurrijke en vernieuwende orgelbespelingen schreef Rob Goorhuis een fantasie over het thema van diens Sonata da Chiesa. Deze Sonata bestond uit een reeksvariaties op een zelf ontworpen thema. De sfeer van het werk reikt van zeer intiem tot uiterst uitbundig. Deze uitersten heeft Rob Goorhuis in zíjn interpretatie en verwerking van het thematisch materiaal eveneens opgezocht. De vroomheid en luister van het orgel werden echter vervangen door de passie en de virtuositeit van een modern blaasorkest. De band met het originele werk van Andriessen wordt onderstreept door een aantal soms licht verborgen citaten van bijzondere muzikale wendingen. De handtekening van de oude meester blijft zo herkenbaar. Op deze manier toont Rob Goorhuis zijn bewondering voor diens componeertalent. Het werk werd geschreven in opdracht van fanfare Kunst en Vriendschap Partij-Wittem onder leiding van Paul Oligschläger ter gelegenheid van de deelname aan het Wereld Muziek Concours Kerkrade in 2009.

As he did before in the often played and commonly appreciated ‘Lord Tullamore’ in which he poetically depicted the landscape and the cultural elements of a small Irish village in his composition ‘The Road to the West’ Carl Wittrock has sketched pioneer existence in America in a cinematic manner. In ‘The Road to the West’ the composer has tried to capture images of pioneer life during the period dating from 1850 to 1890 the days of the so-called Wild West. In those days the Wild West used to be the territory west of civilization the domain of cowboys trappers and other fortune hunters. In short ample ingredients for a captivating story. In the firstscene a lonely adventurer struggles against nature and the elements. After an exciting adventure he passes through ‘the Plains’ where majestic views alternated by colossal mountain ranges display an almost unimaginable beauty. After weeks of isolation civilization is reached again. ‘The Saloon’ is the perfect meeting place – here news is exchanged and hilarious scenes regularly take place.

David Well composed 'Frida's Whiskers' in commemoration of his own cat who met an untimely end. Frida (whose real name was 'Godefrida van Coopersburg thoe Nieuwenhuys') was a lively creature who led a playful and uncomplicated life. She used to sleep in her basket for hours but when she woke up she upset the entire house and its furnishing. Curtains were inspected from top to bottom and flower pots fell from window-sills just like that! Outside in the open air she was in her element. She used to frolic bouncing into the air. After such playful moods she would return to her basket tired but satisfied where being the cleanly cat that shewas she subjected her entire body whiskers included to a thorough wash.

Valley of Flowers-The special landscape in the Valley of Flowers national park in the Himalayas is distinguished by its brilliant colours and the variety of its _x001D_flora and fauna. Marc Cunningham was deeply in_x001D_fluenced by the temple dances of this region. The theme behind these dances which were originally religious performances and for which the dancers dress in colourful garb is the tension between good and evil. In Himalayan Dances - Valley of Flowers various aspects of this ancient dance form are brought into the spotlight.

This work from Brian Connery gets out everything from the simple musical elements that can be found in a grade 1 piece for concert band. The musical development is anything but forced; rather it’s fresh spontaneous and contagiously happy. Are you ready for this Little Voyage ?

The title Whistle for a Penny can have different meanings but brings especially to mind the difficult relationship between art and money… After a short introduction the main theme is heard. This theme is an excellent tune to whistle by the way. After lots of variation in the instrumentation as well as contrasting melodies and themes the finale sees a return to the opening bars of the composition.
