Cecil Armstrong Gibbs was a prolific and versatile English composer of the 20th century. Gibbs is best known for his output of songs but he also wrote a considerable amount of music for the amateur choirsthat he conducted. His reputation as a song-writer largely lies in his natural gift for text setting – he insisted on giving priority to the words over the music and had very clear musical ideas on what a song shouldbe. These principles prevailed when writing The Cherry Tree in 1949 – the Voice is clearly put to the foreground with the Piano only supporting the singer in the background so a confident and capableperformance is needed from the soloist. Comrades In Arms has been a staple of the Male Voice Choir repertoire for almost 150 years. The lyrics are from an earlier poem by George Linley (1798-1865) set to music by the French composer Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) who is perhaps better known for his operas and ballets. Adam provides all the musical contrast you would expect from an operatic composer: from the quiet tranquil openingrefrain of On the breeze a sound is sounding through a vigorous Allegro section before finishing with a march-style call-and-response Be true and brave and win the fight he keeps the listener entertainedthroughout. This exciting chorus is sure to impress any audience. It has been scored for TTBB and includes a Piano reduction.

Lullay My Liking was written for Soprano solo and a cappella Mixed Chorus by Gustav Holst in 1916. It was the second of four short Christmas carols that were published as his opus 34. It was latertranscribed for TTBB Male Voice Chorus and Tenor solo by Herbert Pierce . Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher. Having studied under Stanford and Parry he became a close friend ofVaughan Williams – they would often critique each other’s work – and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. He is best remembered for his Planets suite.
