The ballad of Barbara Allen a story of a heartless beauty who scorned the love of a local lad and the tragic outcome for both has been around since at least the mid-1600’s and has never fallen out of the national songbook. Manyplace its origins in Scotland or the North of England but it entered national ownership centuries ago.Reginald Redman was an extremely prolific composer and the founder and conductor of the BBC’s West Country Studio Orchestra andthe West Country Singers. In addition to the many light Orchestra pieces suites and song cycles Redman wrote he produced numerous arrangements of West Country traditional songs. This charming and effective setting of the sadtale of Barbara Allen is arranged for three equal Voices SSA and Piano accompaniment.

Holst's collection of Twelve Welsh Folk Songs was published in 1931 with the lyrics translated into English by Steuart Wilson . Two of these are presented here scored for SAB three-partchorus with a Piano reduction provided for rehearsal purposes. Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher. Having studied under Stanford and Parry he became a close friend of Vaughan Williams –they would often critique each other’s work – and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. He is best remembered for his Planets suite.
