Ashoob (Calligraphy No. 14) was written for Dariush Saghafi and the Carpe Diem String Quartet. Reza Valis “Calligraphies” series isa set of an ongoing cycle of works based on the Persian modal system the “Dastgâh ” which he has been composing since2000. The basic compositional material of the work is derived from a fast tempo genre called the “Reng ” which is usually performed at the end of a traditional Persian music concert. Versions for Persian Santoor with string quartet (original) andfor string quartet only are available from the publisher. The original version was premiered on March 18-20 2016 at the McConnell Arts Center in Columbus Ohio by Dariush Saghafi Santoor and the Carpe Diem String Quartet.

This six minute work can be performed as a four-hands duo or solo. Commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra this concertino was originally conceived as a part of a complete educational concertprogram. Four concertini each featuring a different instrumental family within the chamber orchestra are played in succession to demonstrate the characteristic sounds of those instruments. The music is thematically related but not identical to the Concertino for Chamber Orchestra (parts available on rental from the publisher) which serves as the program's closer demonstrating all of theorchestral sections playing together. This program is suggested by the composer for orchestra concerts however each instrumental concertino can beperformed individually and stands quite effectively on its own as a short chamber recital piece.

Puentos en la Brujula-Compass Points was commissioned by Trio Verdehr and Michigan State University. The title of the work alludes to the fact that each of its three movements was composed in a different geographical location. The movements do not follow any particular program but each inevitably unfolds under the spell of a different state of mind or circumstance associated with each particular locale.
