Symbolic images of flames burning and fire recur often in Italian love poems from this era and my cycle on texts employingthis fire motive blends stylistic musical features of the period (word painting modality bold harmonic shifts intricate counterpoint augenmusik etc.) within a contemporary compositional idiom. The music emanates from asingle primal sonority (the Fire-Chord) which opens the piece and is found extensively throughout all six movements in myriad forms and manipulations providing motivic unity to complement the poetic. (1993) Written during a period overlapping the composer's Metropolis Symphony this work is inspired by another foe of Superman Bizarro who is an imperfect copy of Superman created by Lex Luthor's Duplicating Ray. Bizarro inhabits an upsidedown world and revels in the brash energies of rock and big band jazz. Propelled on his course by three rock and roll drummers fast tempi and rhythmic excitement make this a rousing addition toany concert. Duration - ca. 9:30

(1989) Since its premiere by the Baltimore Symphony in 1994 at Carnegie Hall the GRAMMY®-winning Metropolis Symphony has entered the orchestral repertoire and been performed by orchestras all over the world. Metropolis Symphony is a five-movement musical response to the world of Superman; MXYZPTLK is named after a mischievous imp from the fifth dimension who regularly wreaks havoc on Metropolis. This brightlyorchestrated movement is the scherzo of the symphony emphasizing the upper register of the orchestra. It features two dueling flute soloists who are positioned stereophonically on either side of the conductor. Duration - ca. 7:00

Metropolis Symphony is a five-movement musical response to the world of Superman; Red Cape Tango Daugherty's final work based on the Superman mythology is set after Superman's fight to the death withDoomsday. The principal melody (first heard in the bassoon) is derived from the medieval Latin death chant Dies Irae . This dance of death is conceived as a tango presented at times like a concertino comprising stringquintet brass trio bassoon chimes and castanets. The orchestra alternates between legato and staccato sections to suggest a musical bullfight.

Following on the success of Arturo Marquez's Danzon No. 2 adapted for band Oliver Nickel's transcription of Conga del Fuego Nuevo (Conga of New Fire) gives an added kick to the concert band repertoire.In contrast to the elegant sinuous Danzon Conga is an uptempo celebratory piece bright and catchy with the percussion section providing the signature kick at the end of the conga pattern. Marquez slowsthings down in the middle section to spotlight the 1st trumpet in a melody that recalls the mariachi tradition. The alto saxes pick it up and relax into a ritard...only to be interrupted by the return of the opening material. Thepiece ends in fiery fashion. Dur: 5:00 SET OF PARTS
