For some reason she was unable to give the firstperformance and so clarinettist Lawrence Bradley stepped into the breach with singer Julia Cleobury. It took place on 3rd May 1979 (which happened to be a very busy General Election night putting Margaret Thatcher into No 10 Downing Street) at StEdmunds School Canterbury. The first movement of Mozart's second clarinet quintet-A very exciting edition to the clarinet repertoire. The first movement of Mozart's projected Second Clarinet Quintet! The 'fragment' that is the basis of this work had been known about for many years and was always considered a trial run for the great K581. But recent dating has shown the two pages of manuscript date from after the Clarinet Quintet. The distinguished Mozart scholar Timothy Jones has proved this to be the beginning of a response to the popularity of K581. It was only as a result of his early death that the work remained incomplete. Tim has completed the work using his deep knowledge of late Mozart and we have now a very important new addition to the clarinetquintet. Malcolm Arnold wrote this little fantasy in the early 1960s as a present for his children Katharine and Robert to play together. Even as a miniature it has many of the hallmarks of the Arnold style: the evocative melodic writing together with the occasional dark dissonance. It was written at a time when Arnold was deeply into film music; indeed in the famous film 'Whistle Down the Wind' the main theme is also for flute/piccolo and is not entirely dissimilar to that found in this fantasy.
